My TR2 is running- idles great but between old carbs, unknown timing and low compression (thinking stuck piston rings) and when I tried to set the timing I had to rotate the distributor all the way clockwise until the vac line interfered with the thermostat housing.<div>
<br></div><div>That rotation does not seem right. Here's what I did. set point gap, loosen cross bolt, wind vernier to pull vac biscuit all the way in. Turned engine to TDC and using a test light rotated dizzy until points just opened. I had to bend the vac line a bit to get the distributor to turn clockwise that far.... turned vernier until first line showed up on vac biscuit - for close to 4 degrees. Still ran poorly.</div>
<div><br></div><div>I am quite sure it was running well when parked due to master cylinder failure.- I really expected to see carb issues - and I still need to adjust those - but until timing is right I don't want to start that.</div>
<div><br></div><div>My issue is maybe the timing chain jumped a tooth - or the DPO (though I don't recall removing the distributor parts 30 years ago) - put the distributor drive in a tooth off. </div><div><br></div>
<div>
I'm going to check TDC is set correctly using my modified spark plug piston stop. - I'll rotate the engine until I'm sure the valves are closing near TDC and insert it and rotate until piston hits mark location; pull sparkplug stop, and rotate through put spark plug back and rotate back and mark - hopefully marks will be on either side of the TDC mark... I don't dare use it for a full rotation as I don't know if it could hit a valve....</div>
<div><br></div><div>Assuming TDC is good -- Now to see if the chain jumped - is it a matter of just looking at the rocker arms and making sure they are both fully seated at TDC?</div><div><br></div><div>Is there a better/easier way to verify this? If the timing chain has not slipped but the distributor drive is just a tooth off - I can live with the weird distributor rotation for a while....</div>
<div><br></div><div>Thanks!</div><div><br></div><div>Chris</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>
