[TR] leather hood straps

I've seen several sidescreen cars with one or two leather hood straps.

We are still pre-paint so I have time.  I think they look really good (not worried about originality) but I just wonder how much trouble they are when you need to open the hood.  On our TR6 we open the hood and disconnect the battery whenever the car is going to sit for hours/days/etc.  I'm thinking that the hood straps become a pita.  And, of course, you can't just take them off.

Anyone have them or experience in this area?
