I find I avoid interior and dash work because its so low to the ground I struggle to get and stay that low for any length of time. I already have a two-post lift so access to the underside isn't an issue, but access to the interior is difficult with the arms and post in the way of the door opening. My concern is whether the popular brands will fit under Triumphs and similar cars. Does anyone have any experience with these on our cars? Specifically I'm concerned about the narrower width of our cars and that we can't lift on "pinch" welds like most modern cars. I usually try to fill the tank up in the early fall, as I think "summer" gas winters over fairly well, especially compared to "winter" gas being held over during the summer. The car is stored in the unheated upstairs of a shop/barn. The first floor of the barn is heated throughout the winter and I would like to think that helps to keep the humidity down where the car and several older farm tractors are stored. Other than the time it takes for the fuel pump to fill the carburettors, our TR6 starts up and runs well after 4 - 5 months in storage. I also try to hook up a trickle charge for a day or two every month or so. If you are looking for a longer storage time, maybe a "dry" fuel system may be the way to go. I recently got a set of 12" two-piece Race Ramps. These expanded polystyrene blocks coated with a material like truck bedliner lift and cradle the TR's wheels and tires to give me about 20" of completely unimpeded access to the underside. The Race Ramps are highly stable -- better than jackstands in the opinion of many, including me. They keep the suspension loaded, so are likely better for long term storage. They're light -- like 7-8l b per crib -- and can hold 1500 lb per crib. Made in the USA (in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.) The 12" kind I have are two stackable pieces, with a 6" lift each time. https://www.raceramps.com/cribs/wheel/p/rr-wc-12-2/ My TR3B was lifted in four stages, twice on each end, to get the final height. They'd be kind of a pain to be lifting and dropping my car on a frequent basis. Race Ramps come in several styles and lift heights, inclduing a version like mine that's 14" at least. Race Ramps are pricey things for what they are -- seriously pricey, in fact. But I'm happy with 'em, and I expect to be happy as the price fades from memory. Here's a crummy photo, but it'll give an idea. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-kd3zj3n/0/DLcc2W522vJgpDCcZzRxdXdjbbf4FVCp6K9TsgQrn/X5/i-kd3zj3n-X5.jpg The hub centers are 24" off the floor. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-bxLZmSp/0/Gsd93SGDsTGJfFV4bTdRp2ZN82jpw2hpkqsWbK7z/X5/i-bxLZmSp-X5.jpg On Thu, May 2, 2024 at 12:14?PM dave northrup wrote: > Also the EZcarlift comes apart for storage although i just usually lean it > up against a wall > > > -------- Original message -------- > From: Benjamin Zwissler > Date: 5/2/24 8:53 AM (GMT-06:00) > To: Triumphs , Shop-Talk List < > shop-talk at autox.team.net> > Subject: [TR] Scissor Lift > > Hello, > > I'm considering a mid- or low-rise scissor lift to make access to > interiors, brakes and suspension easier. Their recommendations regarding fuel levels for vehicle storage are (1) for shorter term -- say less than 6 months -- fill the tank to minimize any moisture condensation, and (2) for longer term storage -- say 6+ months -- run the tank level down (or even drain the tank) so that when the vehicle goes back into service any old fuel is immediately diluted with fresh fuel. I've followed this logic with two of my vehicles stored for many months in recent years (both Toyota/Lexus cars or trucks) and it's worked fine. If you have access to E0 gasoline, go with that too. I've had a couple of cases where fuel pumps (on my BMW R1200GSA ) were likely saved by E0 over E10 or other ethanol blends On Thu, May 2, 2024 at 2:29?PM Cliff Hansen wrote: > I will be storing my TR4A for the next year. During the storage the fuel will (very slowly!) evaporate from the free surface area to the atmos- phere - so it's a matter of getting that area as small as ever possible, preferably just the area inside the filler pipe/hose. I usually loose something like half a US gallon over the winter hibernation [October 1st to, say May 15th] in any of the Triumphs when it's been filled up like this - and have no problems with pooling condensate in the tank bottom...? As soon as the car is taken into use again I do fill it with E05 only for the refill after that first jubilantly happy and sunny drive of some 100+ km / 60+ miles...? And then I keep refilling with E05 until the tank is 'flushed'. B/ If I were to store a car for far longer than just a winter hibernation I'd drain the en- tire fuel system: tank, lines, carburettor(s) etc... /Odd * Though I think winter hibernation storage is rather similar for all of us in wintery climates. ** The higher up the better! But for my fuel injected TR8 it's not recommended to fill it so high one can see a standing liquid level - since it will find a way into the evaporation collector charcoal and ruin it over time. Looking back to those now very distant days, all I recall were vast numbers of all models of Triumphs parked in long rows along the former taxiways, with many up to their axles in mud, water and or long grass as a result of blocked surface drainage. It wasn?t unusual for a car to be at Honeybourne for several months in the open air with no protection whatsoever. Reasons why are too long for this response. On that basis, I?m still truly amazed that so many have lasted as long as they have. Let?s face it, ten years at the very most was the anticipated life expectancy of any of those models and the amount of re-working we had to do before final shipment was usually horrendous. In spite of all those early horrors, lots have somehow survived and been restored and in answer to the question of storage options, my only response would be a dry building that doesn?t leak and isn?t damp, a nice warm blanket, a thorough wax polish, a full tank of fresh fuel, ditto for engine oil and some lightweight machine oil sprayed into each cylinder. I have two Backyard Buddy four-post?lifts, one with an open platform, a rolling jack tray, and two air jacks for undercarriage work, and the second with a solid steel platform that is better for storing narrow cars like my MG TF and Lotus Eleven.? Most four-post lifts are a bit of a compromise as one would want as much open space underneath as possible to work on the car, but the narrow tracks of old British cars makes it a careful proposition?driving them onto the lift to avoid dropping a wheel off to the inside of the rail.? Four post?lifts also are much better for mid-engine cars like my Lotus Elise or 911s, models?that have been known to drop off the rear of two post?stands due to rearward weight distribution challenges. These cars also are very particular about jack point locations (closed aluminum sheet undercarriage), and whether a two post lift or a scissors jack would reach the limited jacking points is always a question. I find that the four post lift with a rolling jack tray and air jacks is great for wheel and suspension work as well. I actually even use it to do tire rotations as it greatly reduces the bending and lifting. I also was able to buy two more cars and keep them stored in my garage... ;-)?
