Added a wire harness around the front, over the radiator to hook up with the ends of the old switch. I believe Triumph did this for the 4a and on as my 6 has a similar setup from stock. I am sure you can rig up something similar for your 3. Bob On 1/4/24 17:15, William Babbitt wrote: > The hydraulically operated stoplight switch on my TR3 has once again failed. Message-ID: I have a '61 Ford Falcon. Also has the hydraulic stop light switch. Original switch lasted approx 40 yrs. Once I switched over to DOT5, the switch lasted a few more months. My car gets about 7 to 9 months to a switch when using DOT5. I have used several different brands of switches, all with the same results. I typically tap my brakes to check the brake light function (usually I check all lights) on every vehicle prior to opening the garage door. My experience is that the pedal force to activate the switch increases as the switch begins to fail. Then I know that I need to change the switch in the next few weeks. I now buy my switches (half dozen at a time) from Rockauto buying Standard Motor brand. This brand also now has the disclaimer not to use w/ DOT5. For me the DOT5 is with the trouble with the switches. We typically have a tech session every month and they?re put on the calendar well in advance. We use either a person?s garage (if large enough) or, if we?re lucky, a communal garage/storage space. The subjects are what the presenter is familiar with, for instance, I gave a tech session on how I put a Skinner interior in my (now sold) TR3 to about 20-25 members. What made it successful was that I had documented the interior install through lots of photos, which I placed in a Power Point presentation. We had access to a large flat screen TV, and I used my laptop. My car was present, too, so I could show a ?slide? on the TV and point it out for real on my car. It helped that I have done dozens of presentations over the years, both for work and my other hobby (railroad history). I believe that presentations should be somewhat entertaining, rather than a dry recitation of facts (it helps that I?m comfortable speaking in front of a crowd and doing so extemporaneously). In May, I will be doing a presentation on wiring, again using my former TR3 as an example (through photos) and a member?s TR2 that is having the loom replaced. I?m not going to talk about electrical theory or anything, just how to install a loom and some of the tricks I learned along the way. It?s the practical aspects that most people have a question about, rather than the hardcore aspects. In other instances we?ve had ?hands-on? explanations, such as replacing the window regulator parts on a TR6. We?re planning to have a tech session on welding in the future. It also helps to have a handout, outlining the steps or relevant info, something one can add to the ?TR notebook.? Make sure you water and feed your guests; in our morning sessions we always have coffee, juice and donuts (paid for by the club). I hope this helps and feel free to contact me with additional questions. I just thought it would be easier to go with the original concept as opposed to drilling new holes. But I think I can take a standard lap belt and either run these ?hooks? through the webbing where the bolt holder is, or maybe cut the belt and run it through the metal clips that are on the current belts. I already bought some Brookland racing screens. They are gorgeous! Can?t wait to put them on the car. btw my car is an early 59 TR3a. its an original LO. i took the OD off and had it put on a TR6 transmission, which will be going in the car. the car came with two engines. The first was likely the original one; there were 2 rust frozen pistons, a crankshaft, and not much else. The second engine is a TR4 engine which had an already rebuilt head. That engine is at the rebuilder, getting 89 mm pistons, mild cam, lightened flywheel, Pertronix, etc. The car will have 6.5? wheels, upgraded suspension, etc., fog lights instead of a front bumper, and maybe a leather strap for the hood. It was, and will stay, a Texas car, is in great shape, and the window sticker (which I am preserving) is from 1972 so I suspect it?s been off the road that long. Its pretty original with blue interior and came with an ashtray!! Message-ID: As part of a discussion I'm having with a TR friend in Europe, we're thinking about what we know regarding radiator overflow bottles and sidescreen cars. My understanding is that they were never fitted from the factory, but they might have been fitted by dealers and/or early owners to keep coolant from puking from the overflow hose. Certainly my TR3B had an ooold radiator overflow bottle fitted to it when I got the car in 1981. It seems to be the contemporary TR4 bottle on my car. Here's that original bottle alongside the car's original windscreen washer bottle. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-zJv7Htg/0/39ff9135/X5/i-zJv7Htg-X5.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-wHHWhnf/0/a051e9f7/X5/i-wHHWhnf-X5.jpg Anyone have any thoughts here? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please respond if you want it and I will try to find the title but I can do a bill of sale for $1.00 if needed because it is so old. On my TR6, my left front tire rubs on hard right turns and bumps in the road (especially at speed). Tire size is 205 70 15 and I have spacer in each front spring. During a recent drive, my son was able to get a photo of the car head on and it does have a minor lean to the driver side. My first guess is that the springs are original and compressed. I have attached photos of both the left and right spring showing the bottom 3 coils pretty much totally compressed. If you look closely, the spacer is about 1/2 up the spring. Am I correct that the proper order to solve the problem would be new springs and spring packing (polyurethane) - goodparts.com looks like they have a good solution. Beyond new springs would be changing some of the suspension pieces to allow more room but I?m hoping that won?t be necessary. I might be able to get away with adding another spacer but springs seem like a better, long term solution. Am I going in the right direction. I couldn?t get a tape inside the spring so measured from top to a center point on the spring and bottom to the same point. Passenger side measured 6.5 inches, driver side 7.5 inches. Top of wheel well to floor - passenger side 28 3/8, driver side 27 1/8. Odd showing shorter spring length but slightly longer from wheel well to floor. As far as I know, no front end damage, tires not showing any odd ware after 10,000 miles (aligned tires when they were last replaced). Goodparts.com shows spring length of 8 7/8 inches (390 lb spring rate), rimmerbros.com is 10.35 inches (330 lbs spring rate) and a lowered spring at 9.33 inches (420 lb spring rate), Moss Motors has several options but they do not list spring height, nothing at bpnorthwest.com . Now getting way out into the ether - found a formula for spring compression, Fitted length = free length - (fitted load/spring rate). Fitted load is the hard number to determine. Using some numbers from the internet , a TR6 is 2,500 lbs with 48.2% on the front. That would be 1,205 lbs on the front (note, saw number of 718 pounds for Spitfire). Using these numbers: Goodparts: 8.875 -(1205/390) = 5.785 - shorter than the existing springs Rimmer standard: 10.35 - (1205/330) = 6.7 - pretty close to existing springs Rimmer lowered: 9.33 - (1205/420) = 6.46 inches Using the 6.7 number, similar to current ride but would new springs compress less on bumps and cornering. Also, is the 1,205 weight in the ballpark. And last thought - the current springs have a 1.5 inch spacer so they really are compress more than the numbers show. I?m guessing that they are offering little resistance to bumps etc. Last, Alan has used the goodparts springs with minimal rubbing. His tire size is 205/60/15 vs. the 205/70/15 on mine. That gives me about .8 inches more of sidewall height. Have I confused the issue too much? Get some springs and see if that does the job? Seems like the standard springs from Rimmer would work the best. You?ll need to get a tape up inside the spring to do it. > Also, measure from the highest part of the wheel arches on the fenders to the deck. > > I?ll duplicate on mine and report.
