IMHO if anyone is planning to remove an engine with or without the gearbox attached, you only do that with the proper equipment. That means buying or renting a purpose built car engine crane with a professionally designed load leveller on the hook. Don’t know what harbour freight or Walmart charge (their website is about as user friendly as a cornered rat) but the HF equivalent outfit in the U.K. charge about GBP260 for a new crane to buy and a further 25 pounds for a load leveller. If you rent a crane, check the loadings for an extendable jib. Fully retracted the crane should easily lift 1000kgs (2240lbs) and fully extended this reduces to 250kgs. Sometimes, we encounter home workshop jobs where you need professional kit and the removal or refitting an engine or engine and tranny comes into that category. I wouldn’t think or encourage anyone about doing it with anything less.
But if shearlegs or a rope around a roof support floats your boat as the cheapskate option, I wouldn’t stand in your way.
