I would get a second opinion. It may not be your carbs. Did you do a compression check? White smoke typically is antifreeze; i.e head gasket. Strombrrg carbs are generally bullet proof and very simple. I?ve had many carbs on many Triumphs over the years and never had any issues for the most part. Even carbs that had been sitting for 20-30 years, no overhaul and they worked. The only issue I had recently on one was a burr on the one of the pistons that caused it to hang up. Check the checkvalves in the float bowls; they tend to stick. I had one stuck open, another stuck closed along with the burr on one piston and the only symptom was power loss. In this case a bubble of air can be trapped in there and not allow the fuel level to rise and shut off fuel.? The late model TR6 carbs had a small valve that switches this vent from the port on the face of the carburettor and a special port that connects to the charcoal canister.? If the air filter gasket doesn't have a hole lined up with that port the air can't vent out.? Also, the special port, which is active only during closed throttle is part of the Anti-Run-On system.? If that has been stripped out all bets are off as to what happened to the special port.? Make sure the holes in the A-F gasket match the holes in the carb face and make sure that extra port is not capped off. It sounds as if you carbs just need a rebuild and this is easy to do yourself if you are in the least mechanically minded. Just go to "Buckeyetriumphs.org and look under" technical" and you will find comprehensive instructions how to do this amd tune them up. If you are not mechanically minded send the carbs to Joe Curto in New York his E mail is joecurto at aol.com and phone is 718 762 7878. >From your description of the engine being awash with gas at start up it sounds like the needle jets are stuck open or the floats are full of fuel. I was not aware that Apple Hydraulics dealt with carburretors and replacing a piston in a carb is not to be done since it disturbs the original carb set up and I can't see why a piston should be damaged beyound repair anyway. As your car is a '76 if you live in California you cannot replace the carbs with SUs because it would fail the emissions test. Just stick with the Strombergs and do't let anyone tell you that SUs are better. The only reason Triumph and other British cars manufacturers changed from SUs to Strombergs was because of emissions. SU was obviously not prepared to put the development work in to make their carbs emission compliant. Torn diaphragms can be an issue, but doesn't sound like it matches your symptoms. Could the choke (enriching lever) be stuck or not adjusted right? Or a float bad or float needle stuck as suggested? If crud gets in the carbs needles can stick whether the carbs was rebuilt or not, old gas tanks and fuel lines are sources for crud. These are all fairly easy fixes and far short of a carb rebuild in parts and labor needed for the fix. As noted, worst case could be head gasket or internal engine but in my experience problems like this are usually a simple fix (once you figure out what needs to be done). The new needle valves I have came with two gaskets, one aluminum and one fiber. Upon opening up my carbs, I find that one needle valve was installed with the metal gasket and the other with the fiber gasket. (Haha another adventure from the DPO!) YouTube provides several rebuild videos - and in one case they use *both*, and in another just the aluminum one. Then the Buckeye Triumphs rebuild page shows only the aluminum gasket in use (and suggests that the correct thickness is 1/16"). And I tend to trust the Buckeye site more than random YouTube vids! I recall using the aluminum gasket in the past - but then I've slept since then. And yes, I know that the float height will be different, I'll get that adjusted correctly. Any recommendation here? Thanks! Lee P.S. Since I wrote this, I've gone ahead and installed with the aluminum gaskets - I'm pretty sure this is preferred for these carbs. But I'm interested in any thoughts about this!! I do have one (from a fox body Mustang) in the Land Rover which has EFI 5.0 just in case the truck falls over or some such on the trail. It has taken a lot on bouncing at different angles and has never tripped. I think it would take a large impact to trip one. There is a big difference in the amount that can flow at 2-3 lb pressure & the amount at high volume 45 PSI before you can hit the ignition switch. I don't think cars had cutoff switches before EFI volume & pressure pumps. TeriAnn > > On Sun, Oct 22, 2023 at 12:15?PM TeriAnn J. I think this was because it wanted to operate at around 8psi when the carbs only needed 2 to 3 psi and therefore a restrictor had to be put in the delivery line. I wasn't aware Lucas made a fuel pump - apart from the ones for the fuel injected cars - and those run at 150psi which is way too high. Personally, I'd always go for the original SU type of pump now made by Burlein Fuel Systems and mount it as others have stated close to the tank. Ensure its blowing and not sucking. It's a solid state unit so *should* last a long time and it pushes at the correct 2-3psi pressure. The fitment of an inertia switch should be an absolute imperative. Not only is it an important safety feature but an excellent anti-theft device. My two pence worth Jonmac -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The small circular mirror was originally intended for clamping to a body panel seam -- Austin Mini door leading edges, as I recall. I carefully bent the support bracket to align the mirror on the raked stanchion, and the setscrew clamp works as well on the stanchion plate as on a body panel. I don't run sidecurtains or soft top -- only a tonneau. This mirror position and mounting would not work with sidecurtains in place because it would interfere with door opening and closing. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-6z8LBFg/1/a39fd046/X4/i-6z8LBFg-X4.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-Q7v69Bq/1/097e1beb/X4/i-Q7v69Bq-X4.jpg Some folks have tapped a threaded hole into the outside of the stanchion and mounted a mirror more permanently than my approach. That can look pretty nice. Other folks have adapted a single-screw mirror mount to a stanchion screw. I've never been crazy about that approach, although it's seemed to work for them. I'm using the Lucas pump, and the Macy's fan. I didn't notice a major difference when those were installed because I had yet to diagnose and correct the head issue. One point to share: on the Lucas pump I got, the pulley shaft was of different length and the threaded portion was a bit short for the pulley I had. Getting the pulley lined up with the crank pulley required some shimming, finding the right size of jam nut, and some locktite. NFI: BP northwest sells a pump and pulley kit for about that same price. TeriAnn On Sun, Oct 22, 2023 at 12:15?PM TeriAnn J. On my TR3 I mounted an electric fuel pump and fuel filter before the pump on the inside of the frame rail. I fabricated a metal mounting plate to mount them to the frame rail by the fuel tank. In general electric fuel pumps are good at pushing fuel but not so much as pulling fuel so having it below the bottom of the tank makes it easier. Especially after running out of fuel. TeriAnn The only time I used a FACET fuel pump it failed on me after about 13,000 miles in the middle of a major junction in Vancouver in the rush hour! I think this was because it wanted to operate at around 8psi when the carbs only needed 2 to 3 psi and therefore a restrictor had to be put in the delivery line. I wasn?t aware Lucas made a fuel pump - apart from the ones for the fuel injected cars - and those run at 150psi which is way too high. Personally, I?d always go for the original SU type of pump now made by Burlein Fuel Systems and mount it as others have stated close to the tank. Ensure its blowing and not sucking. It?s a solid state unit so *should* last a long time and it pushes at the correct 2-3psi pressure. The fitment of an inertia switch should be an absolute imperative. Mechanical pump removed (3 new within 6 months as I defined the problem). In my case the cam regrinder evidently also ground down the cam pump lobe a little. The lobe was only giving the pump leaver a partial pump. The car would hardly idle and my fuel pressure gauge showed 0 at idle. The engine would tend to die if I suddenly gave the DCOEs full throttle. Switched to a pump that was providing 2-3 lbs at idle & the engine was totally transformed. The TR6 gearbox is a better overall unit, so if it were me, I?d opt for it in a car with the upgrades you list. I have 5 TRs and all of them have TR6 gearboxes with A-types. The TR3 should be A-type. I would not want to use a non-synchro first gear box on a TR6, seems like a downgrade. If you don't take the car on trips of any length on the freeway you probably don't need overdrive but you might still want it, even if you don't because it is a fun option. I think what others are saying is you can install the A-type from the TR3 on the TR6 box (you may need a new main shaft, not sure if TR3 and TR6 are the same, but you use a different main shaft with O/D, so I don't know if you could use the TR3 overdrive shaft, the more I think about it probably not, or you would need to get a TR6 main shaft for O/D). Anyway to put in a new main shaft you need to rebuild the transmission, take it all apart and put it back together. I have done everything on these cars, engine, suspension, electrics, etc., transmission is the only one I tried twice and gave up on, read all the books, measured thrice, installed once, still had a dodgy gearbox when done (second gear stopped engaging). Some guys say they took one apart and put it back together in an afternoon with no manual over a couple beers with and adjustable spanner and a hammer and rod to drive bearings in and out and it ran great for years,so maybe I am an idiot and your mileage may vary, but transmission rebuilds are tricky in my opinion. Anyway, the A type can be mated to the TR6 box, but it is a bit of a chore, you can do yourself or pay somebody, you will also need to fabricate new transmission mounts. (fairly easy, there are even instructions out there somewhere to do it with angle iron and no welding), and your speed drive will now be geared wrong I think. This is my long winded way of saying I would sell the 3 box and 0/D and see if I could get a TR6 box and O/D if it were me. Which seemed like it was your original inclination. In some cars, the lubrication of the bearing on the rear of the transmission depends on movement in the front part of the transmission. Coasting in neutral while driving does not normally last long enough to make any difference, but continuous towing of the car can starve the bearing of needed lubrication. On my autocross/mini-stock Cortina, when we saw smoke, I stopped on the shoulder. Our mechanic crawled under to look around and burned his hand on the tailpiece. Lucky for him, there was water in the roadside ditch. The pump was mounted in the stock location. After a year or so, I had to prime the pump every spring. In Colorado, the thing refused to work properly. I drove the Suburban from Brekenridge to Frisco to buy another one. That worked for a while. I finally woke up to remember that when I put a low-pressure FACET in my Europa, the instructions said the pump should be placed lower than the level of the gasoline. At a Minnesota Triumphs tech session, we repositioned the pump to the lowest place practical; bolted to the floor of the spare-tire compartment against the front of the compartment, close to the fuel tank where it did not interfere with the spare tire. Not a bit of trouble for over a decade. Kicking myself that I did not remember that part of the factory instructions from so long ago. > I think this was because it wanted to operate at around 8psi when the > carbs only needed 2 to 3 psi and therefore a restrictor had to be put in > the delivery line. > FACET made these pumps in two pressure ranges. I made sure to get the low-pressure variety. The Europa came to me with a huge AC fuel pump inline with a pressure regulator. The pressure was set too high for the liking of the 45MM side-draft Weber carb, so I turned down the pressure with the knob on the regulator until the Weber behaved. In my ignorance, I did not realize that turning down the pressure turned down the flow rate. This came to my attention at a Corvettes Of Minnesota two-lap autocross. There was a left-hand sweeper on the course which I drove well on the first lap of the run, but exiting the same turn on the second lap the car swapped ends and the engine died. The exact same thing happened on the second run. For my third run, I resolved to go light on this turn on the second lap to learn what I was doing wrong. The Lotus engine cut out just after the turn. I had not spun the car and killed the engine. The engine died when the float chamber emptied and spun the car. I tossed the AC pump and regulator in the bin and installed a low-pressure FACET, properly as low on the car as possible and preceded by a filter, and had no problems thereafter. > I wasn?t aware Lucas made a fuel pump - apart from the ones for the fuel > injected cars - > Dick O'Kane wrote about Lucas pumps long before fuel injection was a thing in common British cars. These pumps were installed inside the fuel tank. O'Kane wrote that if you ever put too-large a fuse in a circuit for a Lucas fuel pump you could have a "truly epic fire". If, however, the transmission is equipped with an overdrive unit, the ring gear, the planetary gears and carrier are all spinning and those are also partially submerged.? They will fling oil about the inside of the OD unit and since the OD and the transmission share lubricant and there are passages between the two some of that oil will find its way to the mainshaft and MAY provide enough lubrication to save it.??
