That is necessary be make room to remove the fan assembly and the access the bolt that secures the pulley.? Once the pulley is out you then remove the timing chain cover since the oil seal is installed from the inside.? If you go to Roadster factory:? https://trf.zeni.net/TR6bluebook/13.php? you will need AF17 cover gasket and AF20 oil seal.? Note that the seal seals up against a sleeve that will come out with the pulley.? Odds are there is a groove worn into this sleeve where the seal rides.? This is from the grit that embeds itself into the seal and grinds away at the steel sleeve.? The oil seal's effectiveness is dependent on this sleeve having a smooth surface which will no longer be there.? I suggest you replace this sleeve as well. https://trf.zeni.net/TR6bluebook/17.php? AJ22.? The alternate is to buy a Speedi Sleeve(r) to present a new, smooth surface for the seal but the Speedi Sleeve(r) will cost more. Assembly is the reverse of the above.? Pay attention to the timing chain tensioner and make sure it is positioned properly.? Depending on how many miles you have on your car, how much confidence you have in your mechanic abilities and how susceptible you are to Shipwright's disease, you may want to replace the timing chain while you are at it. Let it sit a few day then rotate so the other side can be fully covered. Alternatively, you can fill the cylinders to soak.? It just takes a lot more. I can't answer your question on the CWP sizing and casing differences, but I have a Stag differential torn apart and was working on my TR6 differential this past summer. The cases are different at the rear cover and the gasket and rear cover for one will not fit the other in one corner of the case. Since the diff casing is a structural member of the Stag rear suspension subframe, you can't simply exchange one diff and casing for the other since the rear cover won't bolt up. The only part I didn't touch was the worm gear in the box, though I replaced all the bearings on each end of the worm. Despite every effort to make certain all parts were within tolerances, installing shims in various combinations, I just couldn't get the steering to feel right and the steering wheel required too much effort. No doubt, better mechanics than I have succeeded here. I ended up replacing the entire rack by pulling the front apron and radiator and installing a Moss rack-and-pinion rack (Moss 667-248).. The steering now is much easier and accurate. Alternatively, you can have Macy's Garage rebuild your steering box for you or follow their step-by-step instructions and brave it yourself. https://macysgarage.com/stg-box-1.htm Having said that, I note that it seems the price of British parts at Moss and TRF have increased dramatically in the last 6-8 months. Years ago during the restoration I had installed a set of The Roadster Factory nylon bushings in the column and I am pretty sure the squeak is coming from the top bushing on the column. Is white lithium grease OK on nylon my best route or is there a better lubricant? Second question: I have a Tourist Trophy steering wheel and horn push. The worm gear was in good condition. That might be the most difficult part to replace. I replaced the bushing for the rocker shaft and added second bushing opposite to that one if I remember correctly. It was recommended as an upgrade/improvement. I had a machine shop hone the new bushing to size. I replaced all other bits a pieces necessary and available. My steering box works great. However, I think the suggestion of sending yours to Macy's is a great idea. I haven't worked with them, but they have a solid reputation and obviously care about what they do. What you are probably paying for is the cost of liability insurance for the manufacturer. -- Hoyt From dlhogye at comcast.net Tue Nov 28 20:07:54 2023 From: dlhogye at comcast.net (DAVE HOGYE) Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2023 19:07:54 -0800 (PST) Subject: [TR] TR3a dual circuit braking In-Reply-To: References: <6AF5EEEC-A528-4FFB-9FD3-135C32F53332@gmx.com> Message-ID: <1863264145.459746.1701227274489@connect.xfinity.com> I considered this setup, but when I saw the price...I decided to make my own. I think my design is better for a few reasons. 1. The standard box compartment in the fire wall doesn't need to be modified. 2. A downward element of my design attaches through the brake/clutch pedal assembly adding no-lift, no-flex rigidity. 3. It was an enjoyable project with minimal cost. I think it worth separating the front and rear brake components. By the late 1960s, most manufacturers made this standard. Safety and adjustability is gained. Especially for high performance applications. I think it might be a GT6 master. It is in-line. It protrudes into the firewall box compartment, so a modification there is required. Still, much easier than making a completely new system. This system is solid and reliable. With respect, this is not exactly true. While probably all auto companies seeking sales in the US were bound to fit split circuit systems, there were many other markets (more than one hundred) which did not specify split circuits and, as such, cars going to them still had single circuits for quite a number of years into the seventies. It?s also important to remember that as far as UK car exports were concerned, sports cars overall accounted for only about 25% of total output. Firms like Morgan and TVR being the exception to this rule.
