Message-ID: <4CA034E2-794D-4401-92CA-F249DDBB6106@comcast.net> I am looking for advice, even photos, of how to route the wires from an overdrive switch (mounts to the left hand escutcheon) on my left hand drive TR4A I am going to be adding an overdrive to my transmission this fall, and I am trying to get the ?easy stuff? done ahead of time. As I look at the column with the original escutcheon halves removed, I do not see a good way to get the wires into the column ?head? to join the other switch wires. There does not seem to be much room to feed them in without pinching against the metal of the column, but if it goes forward of the turn signal switch. And if the wires pass rearward of that switch then they could interfere with the self-cancelling mechanism. And then once the wires are in there, how do they get fed down and out the column to go into that long narrow cover on the bottom of the column along with the other wires And those wires already there seem to completely FILL the available space inside that cover! How do I free up that cover to get It loose enough to pass the OD wires? So many questions!!! It is not a quick job to do it right and not ruin parts. 1. Undo bolt on the wire cover that surrounds the steering column. You are going to have to remover the cover towards firewall. 2. Undo the bolts to loosen or remover lower steering column locking bracket attached right behind the dash. Two pieces that are silver. 3. Loosen the support stays attached to that bracket. 4. This should loosen the steering column and provide some "play" so you can get the wire cover through the dash. 5. Be careful loosening the wire cover end that goes around the steering cover under the dash. You will have to gently pry the two ends apart to loosen it around the steering column. 6. with play available route the OD switch harness through steering column, out underneath the column and through the dash with the other wires. 7. Then put the wire cover back on and slide through the dash opening into the steeing column opening where the wires all come out. It takes a little time but thatr's it. Like Dave thinks, if it is the top cover switches, the good news is the original Lucas switches can be carefully disassembled, contacts cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled. Beware if the available replacement switches as they are usually garbage. I have some photos of that process. The bad news is, on a Stag that requires dropping the transmission to get to the switches, OR, cutting a hole in the metal transmission cover and making a larger plate to cover the access hole. A caveat though to people looking for dash LED?s: there are some German made LED-s that have an al-u-min-e-um heat sink between the screw base and the lens. It is the same height as the spring holding tabs on the metal socket, and when inserted into the insulated two wire style indicator lamp holder socket and pushed into the instrument socket (six of them), they short out one wire to ground. Beware. Always get the lower wattage non-heatsink style as they are plenty bright. The only ones that does not matter are the instrument lighting circuit (Red with white tracer) because they use the instrument case as the ground path to the black wire screwed onto the instrument mounting post. A dimmable 12VDC LED works for the IGN indicator, have not found one of those in a screw in E-10 base yet so still using an incandescent for the IGN indicator. And if your instrument light plastic spring loaded socket is turning to cheese, we have some 3D printed solutions (see the Triumph Experience 3D printing forum) to easily repair the OE instrument sockets. So here is a challenge for the group I have not taken any time to look into as of yet: My TR250 dash green turn indicator flashes with the left turn but not the right turn. All turn signals, LED front and rear signals function correctly. The only issue is the green turn signal indicator in the gauge does not flash for right turns. The electronic flasher unit has a good audible synthesized ?clicking? when the turn signals are active both left and right turns. Not yet ruled out some issue from the PO/DPM, or a ground wire I missed inside the harness when repairing a burnt Brown w/White wire on the harness. The turn signal light reverses polarity, flows one way for left and the other for right. An incandescent doesn't care, but an LED does. (Me) Bingo ! (Randall) Seriously, LED stands for light emitting DIODE, meaning they only work for one polarity. The TR250 turn signal indicator relies on the fact that incandescent bulbs don't care about polarity. Talk to your LED vendor, they may have a unit that provides for operation with either polarity. Otherwise, you'll have to rearrange the turn indicator circuit to use a (or two) LED. Some possibly workable alternatives: 1) Use a 3-terminal flasher, connect the dash lamp to the 3rd terminal. That's how the TR2-4A are wired. 2) Use two LEDs (possibly even in the same housing), so you can wire one to each side. 3) Insert a diode bridge between the LED and the original turn wiring https://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...WSF&CID=GMC 4) Add a relay with its coil wired in place of the original turn signal indicator bulb, and the contacts switching the LED. 5) Use two diodes (rather than the bridge), and wire the other side of the LED to ground. Or of course just keep using an incandescent. It needs a Zener diode for 12VDC. There are several areas Randall and I collaborated on electrical issues with Stags way back then. I?ll do some searching on that to see if I can find the reference in the digest archives. Thanks for rattling the brain cells! The turn signal light reverses polarity, flows one way for left and the other for right. An incandescent doesn't care, but an LED does. I had to add a little electric solid state doohickey to the circuit to make it work both ways. Randall (RIP) helped me solve that mystery. An electronics guru will be able to tell you what you need. CZT or something like that. Greg Lemon TR250 On Sat, Jul 8, 2023, 7:29 PM > wrote: Andrew, Correct, an electronic three spade flasher works for having LED?s for turn signals and also the turn indicator. It is possible to get an LED for the flasher, as long as you get an LED-compatible flasher (which I did from LiteZupp). But there was no alternative for the ignition lamp. Andrew From: DAVID MASSEY > Sent: Saturday, July 8, 2023 12:52 PM To: dave northrup >; triumph list >; auprichard uprichard.net > Subject: Re: [TR] generator vs alternator That is probably due to the fact that the flasher unit requires a minimum current to operate. Since this is a three-terminal unit with the third wire for the dash indicator switching over to a two-terminal electronic flasher will not work. And the electronic units may be Neg-Ground only. An alternator is a significant upgrade (you can have lights and wipers on at the same time), but it will require different pulleys if it is a narrow belt. I thought most alternator conversions were negative ground, but I may be wrong. You can also stick with the generator and convert to negative ground for radios and other more modern electrical appliances. Not sure about the reference to LEDs: my understanding is that there really is no LED alternative for the dash warning lights. Since the engine was separate, I have no idea how well the generator works or if at all. It is still in the engine compartment, wires connected (unlike the engine). how can I test it? Given the current availability of LED lights, and since I have no interest in installing a radio, should I try to keep the current setup (little joke there) or go back to a generator? To make the right turn signal work with LED?s, you need to install a diode kit. Litezupp has one, which works well on my car. 2. Do not replace the generator bulb with an LED. The alternator requires the resistance of the incandescent bulb to prime the field, apparently. If you put a low-resistance LED bulb there you might not get a charge. There?s a good discussion of this on the Litezupp site. Clearly not - or it?s not a recognised term in Texas :) Anyway, the meaning as per Spinal Tappets. The small group from the TR Register felt the various song titles in which Triumph models are named, was an inappropriate and distasteful way of poking fun at our cars. They didn?t like it, it was unkind, it was not justified. All I can say to those sensitive souls is they should have been at the factory and the two company owned Service Divisions in days of yore. If they had, they?d have heard multiple opinions regarding product quality, assembly practises and non-sensical ?improvements?. All of them were described in basic Coventry-ese with generous servings of a myriad of expletives to ram the points home. I?ve repeated some of them (without the expletives) to various groups to whom I give talks throughout the year - and mostly the reactions are shock, horror and a good few ?don?t knock the product? comments. Ive come to the conclusion that many enthusiasts in the U.K. either have limited or non-existent imaginations, or they?re so besotted with their beloved cars that they can?t bear to see or hear them being criticised, even constructively. This probably explains why most of my former colleagues aren?t model or marque specific Triumph club members because they, like me, can?t cope with the endemic ?politics? that are so rife. Instead, we have our own little unofficial club where Standard cars (from 1920 onwards) Triumph cars (post 1945) and Ferguson tractors (post 1946) all mix together and everyone is happy. I understand much the same applies in the U.K. to former employees with big Healeys, Spridgets, Jaguars and MGs. We all muck in together but too many people are leaving us each year for another life beyond the stars where oil leaks are unknown and Lucas is far better and more reliable than anything which ever came out of Bosch or Magneti Marelli. Have I clarified? The 51348 requires a steeper housing angle than the 51056, which means more spillage when changing, but it has more capacity and I can get it in an XP which has about twice the filtration. I?m not and never have been. What I have is a genuine Standard Triumph tools wallet with working press stud and the ST logo with the following items within: One 1/2? x 7/16 open ended spanner in black One 1/2? x 9/16 open ended spanner in black One double ended box spanner 17.8mm and 20.6mm across internal flats. Can?t give you imperial measurements as my callipers only measure in metric. One box spanner Tommy bar with a screwdriver blade at one end and a nave plate removing hook at the other. One pair of adjustable opening pliers. These are very slightly rusted but after all they?re not in the bloom of youth! One tool carry wallet aforesaid. I hope the picture I?ve attached has come through but email me off list if you don?t receive it with this post. I think this toolkit probably came from my late Father?s Standard Vanguard Vignale from 1959 as the nave plate remover was certainly issued with that model. That said, the same tool also appeared in later Triumphs and especially for cars equipped with imitation Rostyle wheel trims. Postage from the UK to the States or Canada is 20 dollars US. I don?t know what these are worth to anyone because the sale proceeds, less the P&P, will go to charity and not me. I?ll keep the auction open until midnight on Friday 28 July. Your bid should include the P&P cost. If there?s more than one winning bid to an identical value, I?ll take the earliest bid based on the receipt time and date. Technology to one side, given that BMW has utterly prostituted the appearance of every Rolls Royce since it took ownership of the marque, this styling exercise is an insult to the memories of Siegfried Bettmann, Colonel Holbrook, Donald Healey, Sir John Black and the Triumph name as a whole. BMW also wanted to resurrect the Riley name which it kept after ditching MG Rover and imho Riley is just as much an equal to Triumph and especially pre WW2. So here it is. My take. The main problem I have is low range and they don't work in the very cold like we get up here in NY from mid December through early March. I already store my Triumphs in the winter, I would have no garage space for an EV. Maybe when they get a 500 mile/tank range like my wife's Camry and a 10 minute refill/charge then maybe and yes, they would have to operate the same in the winter and that includes heat/defrost. As far as a 21st century Triumph? I have zero interest. I am quite happy with my 20th century versions. It scratches the itch and satisfies all my classic car needs, but I have to say, my Tesla Model Y is a kick to drive. We all know about the quarter mile and 0-60 performance they bring. What I didn't anticipate is the lag free throttle response. There's no downshifting, or delays in the fuel map, or getting on the cam. It's now! The acceleration is instant. I find myself getting into trouble when I get back into an ICE. I mash the throttle expecting instant acceleration but it's not there. The guy is now on my bumper; whereas, with the tesla I'm way out in front. It's a different driving experience and very satisfying! I don't drive it as much as i used to, in all honesty, I'm too busy with other things to give it the devotion it needs. I would like to offer it to anyone on this list that would like to purchase it, before listing it publicly. It has been a very good car, and while it has fallen into disarray, I feel that it is a good project for someone that would like to restore it to its former glory. Here's the deal on the car: The engine was rebuilt about 20 years ago by myself and my cousin, who is a certified Porsche/Audi mechanic. We bored it .40 over, put in a mild cam, had the crank cleaned up, put in new pistons of course and left everything else alone. Nothing was spared on making the engine right. It has had probably 5K miles put on since then, and it will pull strong. New clutch, TOB, all that stuff, and has the Landcruiser shifter fork and all that. It was built right. The last time it was run was April of 2022. I'm ashamed to say it, but it's the truth. She deserves better than I can give her. I will probably start and run with some TLC, but she really needs new carbs. These were cleaned up in early spring of 22, they're not really as good as they should be. Brake system was good at last drive, I converted it over to DOT5 some years ago, it was done properly, and has given no trouble since. Bodywise, I had a friend of mine paint the car, it was done as well as he could do it, but in no way is it a high dollar paint job. The code on the car is senia, but when I got the car, it had already been resprayed to maroon, so I left it at that color. It has one small "Boo-Boo, near the left headlight, won't take a fortune to fix it, but it is there. There is some bubbling under the paint on the rear deck lid, I would recommend that this be addressed pretty quickly. Otherwise, the body's pretty good. The frame is straight, has never been wrecked. I would say that all the rubbers, windshield, windows, etc. should be replaced, but that will be up to the buyer. The top is shot, but I have a new one(different color, i was going to convert to biscuit) I will throw in. The interior is complete, but is rough. needs a new tranny tunnel, carpet, dash, glovebox, etc. I have pictures I will include if I can get them on here. Not hiding anything, this car is an open book, I'll be happy to answer any questions as honestly as I can. I haven't set a price on the car, I figured that y'all would know more about that than I would. I don't want to give it away, but I do want to be fair about it. Advice is welcome. The car is located in Franklin, N.C. about 1.5 hours west of Ashville. For those that don't know, that's about 2.5 hours from Knoxville, Tn. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. Thanks! Your "Selling the 6" post came through just fine. I don't understand what you mean about it not coming through. mjb. I occasionally get responses. Maybe similar situation here.
