Too late at this point, but for years a neat fix suggested has been to solder/weld a small nut to the inside of the cap so that screwing the bolt through that hole has much better grip.

I don't start out that way, but I usually end up that way.  Allegedly you can put a screw in through the little hole and drive them off, but all that does for me is make the little hole into a big hole. 

On my VWs, those caps would last a hundred years, but Triumphs are...different.

 

I always keep new caps in stock now.
