I have always tapped with a large screwdriver close to the base angled as
much as possible to push outwards. The caps may get a little buggered up,
but still usable. I believe there is a little ridge you can catch with the
screwdriver to assist with the process. Just firm gentle taps until it
starts moving.
I used to do the slide hammer thing with a screw, but a screwdriver and
hammer is always handy and works well. The caps are pretty sturdy.
