I just installed a set of NOS rear lever shocks on my TR3. I have had them about 25 years. When I took them out of the box, one of the shocks was full of oil and the other was dry. I have hoped that maybe I just overfilled the shock and it will just leak to a certain point and then stop leaking. Probably naive on my part, but one can hope. ???? Question: Moss sells new hydraulic shocks for $199 or rebuilt shocks for $289 (+150 core charge). Does anyone have any experience with the "new" shocks? Are they "made in China"/County brand junk? ???? Is there a risk of just having one shock rebuilt? I would rather not send in the other NOS shock to be rebuilt if it is new. My theory is that I will get one shock rebuilt and if the car still drives fine then leave it at that. If it feels like the two rear shocks are different, then I'll send in the second shock to be rebuilt. ???? Are any of the shock rebuilders better than the others? I've had them rebuild 3 sets of shocks and they come back bullet-proof. Their standard upgraded should make the shocks last a lifetime. You can have them do an exchange for already rebuild shocks, or have them rebuild yours and return them. I always do the latter as I like getting back what I sent. I'd do both shocks at the same time. If the other 25 year old NOS shock doesn't leak now, it will, and I think it's best to have two "equal" shocks instead of one new and one old-new. And I always prefer rebuilding original parts instead of buying new lower quality parts. Especially when there are experts out there who do top notch work. My two cents... Material was in all likelihood an aluminum can cut to fit. As I recall the fix worked well enough to keep the wipers from slipping the until the rest of the car oxidized beyond the point of safe or practical use--i.e. a winter or two. Feeler guage stock, aluminum can, thin sheet brass (available at hobby lobby or hobby Towne). Alternative would be adhesives, small hole and dowel or set screw (if you have sacrificial wiper arms too. I hope I am explaining this accurately.. After further investigation I found that if I turn in the wipers and hold the driver side wiper box, I can feel the knurled wheel skip. So I removed the driver side wheel box and the gear that is driven by the cable is definitely worn. I would prefer to find a decent original vs. installing a new one but I may have no choice as I scrounge through my spare parts bin. T- minus a day and a half till we leave for Watkins Glen! It is this devotion, her goals, mission and massive amounts of British stick that I will always admire. Her values & peers with equay lofty goals kept me going as we soldiered on since 2011. God save the Queen & may her values, attitude & actions live long in the United Kingdom & its many Commonwealth nations & current & ex-territories. * and the final years of British motorcars like TR.
