The top looks great on the car after 10 years and fits very well. My only complaint is that the top requires some work to get up when its not warm out. I?ve spoken to a number of top installers and they have told me that the Robbins pattern for the TR6 is not long enough in the rear sections by the windows and that is the difficulty. Other than that, when the top is up or down with the sunfast tonneau cover on it looks great! If you do a cloth top my recommendation would be to have a really experienced professional installer do the work. Robbins does certify installers. I have just put the motor & gearbox back in my car after having extensive bodywork renovations, and having the overdrive rebuilt. My overdrive does not now engage when I pull the overdrive switch while driving in top gear. Part 1. I have tested the wiring & relay and determined that with top gear engaged and the overdrive switch on then I do have live 12v feed to the wire entering the top of the overdrive solenoid. Therefore I believe the switch, isolating switch on the gearbox top cover & relay are all working ok. With the engine off but ignition on when I activate the overdrive switch and watch the adjustment setting lever on the RH side of the overdrive (with the 3/16" hole for checking adjustment) this flicks forward, BUT when I check that lever by hand I can easily pull it backwards with no resistance. This would seem to indicate that the solenoid is faulty, i.e. the closing coil winding is working but the holding coil winding would seem not to be working. Conclusion I need a new solenoid? Part 2. I have carefully read my manuals, but nowhere do they document how to replace this solenoid. It appears to be held in place by two cheese-headed screws externally, and I obviously need to remove the inspection plate held on by three cheese-headed screws to gain access to the actuating lever. Is there any trick involved in how the relay actually pulls this lever and how it is physically connected to it? I am also hoping that with the gearbox cover removed there is enough room to do this without having to remove the gearbox from the car? ( I have noted the correct procedure for setting the operating lever via the 3/16" holes.) All advice gratefully received. Either that or the disconnect switch contacts are no longer conducting.? It that part was working it would kick back in when you moved the lever away from fully retracted.? And it is not.? Your description suggests the holding coil is all that is working.? The pull in coil will pull the plunger into the solenoid if there is no resistance but once underway it needs to overcome the pressure of the oil in the accumulator and the pull-in coil does not generate enough force to do that.? Either way you need a new coil. Removing the solenoid is quite easy, as I recall - it's been years.? The operating lever is a piece of flat steel that has been folded to create a hook with an open end.? The solenoid plunger has a reduced diameter distance with a shoulder on either end of the distance.? This reduced diameter distance fits into the hook. ? Once you remove the cheese-head screws you can lift the solenoid and disengage it from the plunger and then manipulate the plunger to disengage it from the hook.? It's that simple.? Reassembly is the reverse of the above. Cheers and good luck. A weak or dead cell can still provide 12v but not enough amperage to actually engage the od. Been there done that. Long time since I've posted, my car has, up till yesterday, been behaving itself nicely. Yesterday the driver's door glass dropped off of the window regulator as I was trying to wind up the window prior to backing out of the garage. Then later the same day the fuel gauge suddenly displayed well past a full tank. The tank is at about 1/3 to 1/2 full. The water temp gauge is reading correctly so I am thinking the bimetal voltage stabilizer is OK. I checked the connections at both the tank and gage. I checked that the ground lead at the tank was grounded. I am measuring about 67ohm across the sending unit terminals. The Bently manual is worthless on this subject - simply stating that there is no repair to either gage or sending unit and replacement is the repair method. No resistance values given for empty and full tank. Frustrating. Before I order a fuel tank sending unit, does anyone know what the ballpark resistance values might be? What am I forgetting to check? TIA. Off in digest mode awaiting your answers. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Use a piece of bent wire and move the float throughout its range and observe the gauge.? Don't for get that the gauge is stabilized so the needle moves slowly regardless of how quickly you move the float. Also if the float is at the bottom of the tank while the fuel level is higher then your float is bad. Generally speaking it is the sending units that go bad.? the "wiper" that is actuated by the float wears out the wrapped resistance wire on the sending unit.? Usually bunching it up and causing false readings.? No point in trying to fix it, just replace it. The wall-warts (plug-in DC power supplies) are voltage regulated and will put out a constant voltage over a range of input voltage.? Once you drop below a minimum it will just shut off. If you can find 100 ohm variable resistor you can simulate the tank sending unit and test the gauge that way using a plug-in power supply. Following up you can connect the fuel gauge to the temp sender and take a test drive and see if the fuel gauge reads in a manner similar to what you would expect from the temp gauge. Combination of two things (as it usually is.) faulty solenoid, which I luckily was able to source from TR NZ Register spares held in New Zealand, and also the operating lever actuated by the solenoid was not clamping properly onto the overdrive operating shaft. Had to pull that off, then carefully enlarge the slot in the lever which compresses onto the operating shaft so that it grips properly. Several test drives down the local road and back shows the overdrive operates promptly, nice and quiet now with no noise it had from the worn bearings - mind you it has done 170K MILES without being touched so I guess I shouldn't complain too much ! Thanks everyone Alan Dunscombe TS3612 New Zealand -----Original Message----- Message: 2 Date: Fri, 7 Oct 2022 15:01:39 +0000 (UTC) From: DAVID MASSEY To: "dunscomb at chch.planet.org.nz" , "triumphs at autox.team.net" Subject: Re: [TR] Overdrive solenoid fault TR2 Message-ID: <982963181.6133567.1665154899996 at mail.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Actually, I think the Pull-in coil has failed.? As for a trickle charger, be aware and do your homework as I?ve learned that they aren?t as plug and play as you?d think. A restoration shop I?m using told me even the Battery Tender Junior he?s seen catch fire and burn up the car and the garage it?s in. I now have a timer on the trickle charger so it will cycle on and off every other day. I also have an Airsteam trailer and found out the hard way, not a fire thankfully, that even the charger/converter that came with the trailer when plugged into shore power baked the 2 deep cycle batteries. I was then directed to new unit on Amazon that I installed, that is designed to plug in and leave it for months and months, no issue. Back to a battery charger for your car, this one is crazy expensive which I received as a gift from my wife for my Porsche 356. Before using it I checked to see if this was a plug and play for months charger, and it is. https://www.stoddard.com/pcg35661171.html So I?ll be watching this topic to see if there are other chargers out there that are safe to leave plugged in for months at a time. These will quickly charge a battery until it is fully charged and then "float" the battery at ~13.7 volts.? You can leave these connected forever without endangering the battery. In my line of business we buy between 300 and 400 chargers a year.? We have tested and evaluated many chargers and these three pass muster.? There are probably other quality manufacturers out there that do not offer the style/size charger that fits our needs so we haven't evaluated them anddon't consider the fact that they are missing from my list as a recommendation to avoid. The CTEK model Don referenced is a good charger.? I have a couple at home and use them when I need to charge a battery.? The units I have need to be told what battery type you have (wet cell, AGM, motorcycle) each time you hook it up.? This is not an issue for car hobbyists but our application needed a charger that will start automatically when power is plugged in. In addition to the CTEK there are a couple of companies to investigate. ChargePro(R) (a division of Marinco) makes chargers for the boating crowd.? While we car hobbyists have a passing interest, boaters live and die by their chargers.? Consider that most boats sit idle for months on end but have to start and support all manner of electrical accessories like lights, two-way radios, depth finders and such. https://marinco.com/en/products/Power-Conversion/Battery-Chargers/Charge-Pro Another, new company out there is NOCO with their Genius line of chargers.? These seem to be readily available and they have a wide selection. https://no.co/brands/noco-genius Any of these three come with my recommendation. Drill, Impact driver, Circular saw and light use chain saw. Good tools, no problems and now multiple batteries to rotate among the bunch. The batteries will lock you into a certain manufacturer and keep buying products within that generation of battery. I've been using three of the original trickle style Battery Tender chargers for many years and leave them on vehicles, cars, trucks and motorcycles, for months. Somewhat recently, I purchased what might be one of the Junior models. It also gets used for long periods. I'll keep a closer eye on that one now, but it seems to be working excellently. These maintenance chargers should not be used to bring low charge or dead batteries back to life. First use a standard higher amperage charger before switching to a maintenance charger.
