It is composed of the bimetal spring and a heater? As the heater heats up the bimetal spring will open the contacts and switch off the heater (and the voltage to the gauges).? As the spring cools off the spring will switch the power back on and so the cycle continues giving an average voltage of 10 volts. The electronic versions are actually analog.? They use a classic integrated circuit voltage regulator that is a tried and proven part.? If they are prone to failure it is because the designer did not make proper precautions against the very unfriendly environment a car's electric power system is.? This is especially true in older cars.? When loads are switched on and off there are voltage spikes, both positive and negative, that will far exceed the ratings on typical solid state components.? Motors are especially prone to doing this.? Heater fans, wipers, starter motors. I have designed many custom electronic devices for my cars and I have never had one fail.? But I don't cheap out on the protection devices.? The Crane ignition module is another example of an electronic device that stands up well to the nastiness doled out by the car's electrical system. All that said, I still run an OE voltage stabilizer in my TR6.? Never found a need to change it. Dave I went through three digital stabilizers in my TR4 before I reverted to an original analog one and haven?t had a problem since. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have an A-type OD, professionally rebuilt and "pepped up" (increased engagement pressure), which I planned to install in my TR4 for autoxing. Two knee replacements have scrapped those plans, so the OD is of no use to me. I'd really like to see this go to someone who wants to get the most out of their TR4 or TR5. This won't fit TR3s unless a fully synchro gearbox has been fitted. Connect the cathode end of the diode to the positive terminal and the anode end (the end of the diode with the line om it) to the negative terminal. this will have no effect when the relay is energized. When a relay is denergized it generates a spark which can burn the points. The diode will allow this spark to travel through the diode and dissipate. Connect to relay negative connection. Connect that to the positive terminal. Connecting a diode across the coil will do noting for the contacts burning up.? It will protect the temp switch, however.? Placing the diode across the contacts will quench the arc there.? Another possibility, one that I use regularly, a varistor designed for just such an application.? Something like this: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/bourns-inc/MOV-10D220KTR/2407603 This part is not polarity sensitive and will limit the voltage across the contacts to a point where no spark will be generated. However, the actual contact of the relay are electrically separate from the solenoid. The OP did not state in what manner The relays fell. Does the solenoid stop working? Do the contacts stop conducting or fuse together? I have not had many relays fail. Usually it?s the contacts that fail. And that is usually due to high current demand across the contacts. There are 40 amp rated relays that are physically identical or extremely similar to the standard 30 amp relays. One of those might be worth a try. You can get relay sockets that have the diode built in, by the way. With the diode, you need to be extremely mindful of polarity! By that I mean that the solenoid now has a positive and negative terminal. It certainly would not be harmful to have a diode across the relay contacts as well. Switching and inductive load can cause arcing across the contacts similar to what is found in ignition points. Electric fan motors can certainly be an inductive load! -Tony > Message: 2 > Date: Thu, 16 Jun 2022 13:02:30 -0400 (EDT) > From: ronald.olds at mchsi.com > To: keithstewart at bell.net > Cc: triumphs at autox.team.net > Subject: Re: [TR] Electric Fan Relay > Message-ID: > > Keith, > > I would recommend connecting a 1N4004 diode across the positive an the ground terminals of the relay coil.
