Message-ID: <009401d800ee$521a2050$f64e60f0$@gmx.com> A few days ago I offered a picture of Sir John Black for anyone planning to use their Standard or Triumph car. Those of you who replied to my email have been sent their copies but I am sending this to the Triumph List for those people who saw the original post, still want a picture copy but omitted to contact me requesting one. Picture attached as a .pdf. I've done my best to ensure it will print properly on US size paper and not A4. A polite request. I don't normally issue pictures from my fairly extensive archive without requesting a small payment. I'm foregoing that this time in recognition of who the person portrayed is and his several kindnesses to me as a child and teenager. I would therefore be grateful for the copyright to be displayed if this picture is later published or used on any Standard or Triumph car for his Birthday Drive or any Drive your Triumph Day event. If it is small then setting the natural level with the weight of the car and tighten down. But I would ask, why did it oval in the first place? Is the sheet 'thinned' out? The reason I ask, it should be taking the some pressure/punishment as the rest of ours, unless it was raced/rallied? Then the extra backing/beefing up is well worth it When I replaced my shocks, I also did an upgrade to get a tight 'hold'. I replaced the hex bolts with grade 8 socket head bolts. So much easier to remove and tighten. Mind you, I have not needed to touch them since I got new shocks years ago. I got my Robbins Stayfast top form TRF, no problem there. I had the top installed by a Robbins Certified installer here in Massachusetts. The new top was difficult to get up, requiring a lot of tugging and convincing. Both Robbins and the installer said that a few months out in the sun would relax the top, but it did not. In speaking to a high end custom top installer a few years later he told me that the rear sections of the Robbins top were cut too tight and that was a recurring problem he had had with TR6 Robbins tops re: getting them to go up easily. That being said, the top looks great and, to my mind, make the car look great. I?d be curious to know if others on the list with Robbins Stayfast tops have had the same experience. It is hard to put up, the snaps are near the bottom on the lower back sides and it is still a bear to get them on unless hot and sunny. Also hard to stretch it to the rail. This would be consistent with either the tops being cut a little tight in the back, or me no knowing what I was doing when I installed the top. I always store it in the winter on, as figure that makes it less likely to shrink, and on sunny days I sometimes put it up and kinda try to stretch it out. Not getting any better, but not getting any worse either. Soft top fabric stretches in the heat & contacts in the cold. A top that had its fittings put on during a warm summer afternoon will shrink in cold weather & be next to impossible to fully fasten up when it is cold. My suggestion is to fit the snaps during cool weather when you would normally erect the top to protect from cool weather whilst driving. It will tend to be a little loose when erected to protect from hot summer sun, but at least you will be able to get it properly fastened down during cooler weather and you wont be trying to stretch it enough to get it fastened if hit by a shower while motoring. I did mine outside in fifty something degree weather & never had a problem fastening it in any weather. Sun or no the fabric is more pliable & easier to stretch on warm temperatures. Suggestions have been to tighten the adjustment screw so they don't open. So I have just read the Dealer Training on the subject of Carburetion. I see how the compensators work and make the fuel mixture leaner when at operating temperature. The doc says when they open, it weakens the depression which allows the piston to fall slightly thereby cutting the available fuel and creating a leaner mixture. I found that the same problem you have actually was caused by too high fuel pressure. My problem went away when I installed a fuel pressure regulator in the gas line between the fuel pump and the carbs . I hooked up a vacuum/ fuel pressure gage simultaneously and set the fuel pressure to 1.5-2 psi. Basically ZS carbs will flood just a wee bit by the float valve not being able to hold back fuel any higher pressure than that. Hence higher RPMs once warm with the extra fuel. One indicator of this is a Triumph that needs little or no choke to start up when cold. These cars were designed to be choked on most. The eBay ref number is 144385250568. It?s in a place called Uxbridge, MA and is advertised for GBP9500 which is roughly 10500US. Yes, it needs work and perhaps best described as a bit of an old knacker with potential, busted knuckles and a few oaths. Commission number is in the 4000 range so about halfway through 250 production. Colour was Conifer Green (not British Racing Green) with black trim and no overdrive which made those cars such fun. It?s Missing carbs but about 12 pix to whet the appetite for someone brave enough - I won?t say dumb enough - to take it on. Reason I?m posting here is the selling price includes shipment from New York to any European mainland port which even excluding marine insurance and US harbour dues has to be worth at least 750US off to a US buyer and I?m sure a good deal could be cut by a US buyer for even more. I?ve seen far worse for a lot more on both sides of the pond. No financial interest on my part as my days of playing with Triumphs is long past. Selling them and keeping them running when they were new was bad enough. The differentials were generally pretty quiet when new, but from what I have read and experienced a rebuilt may or may not whine a little at certain speeds, pretty hit or miss, the one I replaced was rebuilt and made a lot of noise. Plus the Nissan unit was designed to take much higher torque and hp than the Triumph diff, plus limited slip (I autocross too). I don't think the diff swap changes the character of the car at all (kind of like pertronix, reversible, doesn't really change the car, just modern and pretty bulletproof) I hear a little more engine noise and a little less differential, that is a good thing. I converted my existing transmission to overdrive rather than going with the five speed conversion because I like the whole Triumph driving experience too. Ultimately, you own your car, do what you want with it. My thinking as to why it goes away when warm is this: If the splines are dry or if the grease gets ladened with dirt and such they will stick a bit.? As the car warms up it is because it is being driven which will loosen up the stickiness and it will start to behave better until it sits a while and cools off. The tube can be longer then a flexible tube/hose can go to a can. The bigger the tube and hose the better. If the tube is longer and pointing upward then the oil will run back down to the block. They howled or moaned or rumbled and this issue affected the whole model range. It was unusual to find a car with a quiet one! Many different ?cures? were tried and the only moderately successful one was to change the machining angle of the gear teeth. The axles were all bought-in components from (I think a company called Salisbury) who maintained that modifying the manufacturing process (angle of gear teeth cutting) would result in a higher cost price which the Purchase Department refused to consider, so we were stuck with noisy axles. About 2 years ago I removed the PCZv valve due to excessive carbon buildup and added a TR4 style crankcase vent pipe. > > >> That stopped my carbon buildup issue but created a new problem which is oil now is dripping off the bottom of the car. > > >> Now to my question.. Has anyone out there done a similar change of adding a TR4 style crankcase vent tube and then plumbed in a oil catch tank? Those were what was inside my TR3's overdrive. The google says they were bought out in '69 so I'm assuming they were the original bearings. (I guess they could have been NOS for sometime after that, or kept the product name for a while). Either way they weren't in bad shape. http://www.hoffmannbearings.co.uk/history-of-hoffmann-bearings.html -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The previous owner of 45 Years told me they were never changed from new. I replaced but kept them in a bag to keep with the car. They still looked good too, but decided to put new Timkens instead. They were bought out by NSK in Japan. Maybe some NOS RHP still lying around but failing that, I?d go for Timken.
