 The short answer is yes.  Your ignition system shares a ground with your 12 system.  No problems.
The longer answer is "it depends."  It depends on your step-down "transformer," whatever that is.  But I suspect it is just a buck voltage regulator and it is non-isolated and there will be no issues there.

I'm converting a Jeepster from 6 to 12 volt.. the instruments are bimetal and certainly won't tolerate 12 volts. I have a step down transformer for them. My question/concern is can different voltages share a common ground? Dave P
