Hi all, particularly those in the "Mother Country",

 

A DPO has fitted an after-market linkage on a 1976 Dolomite 1850 HL.  I
cannot find a reference for the original specifications and need help! This
aftermarket unit does not allow for full throttle or acceleration and
measures 70mm an at its smallest.  

 

Can someone please tell me the length of the original linkage, Part Number
UKC 595 (NLA), so I can make something similar and re-set the carbies before
progressing on the rest of the tune-up?

The gearbox on my 66TR4A (non-OD) is a bit leaky, and one of those places (which think I can fix without removing the transmission) is the speedo drive. On my TR8, this part just pulled out after removing the retaining plate. On my TR4A, I've removed the retaining bolt (that comes in from the top), but I'm unable to get the drive assembly to budge. 

I've tried pulling on it using the cable nut to give me more leverage, and I've tried to rotate the brass housing that protrudes from the gearbox case, and I can't get any movement. 

Before I break something, is there anything else I need to do before removing it? Any tips/tricks to removing it? Other than the parts diagram in the manual, I can't find any mention of it.

I have a Stag which I think uses a similar box. I recall it can't come out
as there is a possibility of it braking u need to take the end off or
something like that .
I did take it off the box with out reading the manual.  It came out ok

There is a bolt / set screw that comes down vertically from above the drive. If you are looking from underneath you might not see it. It is adjacent to one of the tail shaft housing bolts.

Just a quick update, since I have it out now.  Thanks for all of the suggestions, I actually got it out before my message even went out, for some reason I didn?t see it back until today, when I sent it yesterday.

Anyway, what I ended up doing was using a screwdriver in the gap between the housing and the cable nut, moving around to get new fulcrums as it started moving out.  It was really stuck, it was almost all of the way out before I was able to get it to move the last little bit by hand.  The only downside was that I munged the cable nut up pretty good doing this, so I?ll be putting a new cable in as well.

One I got it out, the next mystery was how to replace the seal inside.  It turns out the exposed end is really a cap that is threaded into the body.  After a bit of persuasion, I was able to get that removed, and can now replace the inner seal as well as the o-ring.  But first I need to make sure the housing can be put back with a reasonable amount of forces, as I will need to line up the bolt that holds it in place.

I did get one suggestion with pictures of custom puller, which would have done the trick and probably not required the sacrifice of the cable.  Maybe next time?

Thanks for the post. I have to wonder how prices for 3's and 4's are 
doing. I have a 3, 4 and 6 + a 74 T140V in the garage. Around here I 
dont see Triumphs, MGs very often, even at shows and car hops. Havent 
seen an older Jaguar in years.

I?ll add that Richard and I worked together to complete the CV half shaft axles last issue of the solid axle piece so the CV half shafts fit properly into a Stag.  

 

Richard and I went through the final full travel suspension measurements which required Richard to change the initial length of the solid shaft piece of the axle, which meant a couple of iterations shipping axles until the fit was perfect for full suspension travel of the swing arm, that we setup without a shock damper in place to allow for the most travel and movement of the CV under any circumstance of suspension combinations.  99% of users would never know that for standard and fast road driving, but it makes a difference for autocross

 

Now the CV axles can be properly ordered for and installed on a Stag ( or other TR with IRS, which means those are the last half shaft axles you will ever need for your Triumph.

Helping that average increase are several TR?s that have sold for over $55k.  And who can argue because a well sorted TR is a reliable and fun vehicle that is easily maintained and repaired with simple tools.

I've been using the blue E pads.  Purchased through Summit Racing.  I think Hawk is easy to communicate with if you want to know specifics.  I think they are in Ohio.

Hi TeriAnn,

We actually had lunch together once way back in the mid 1990's. Jerry Kaidor and I worked together and he treated me to a lunch gathering of local Triumph and LBC enthusiasts in Santa Clara County somewhere.

Pretty much for the same reason that late 60's and early 70's Porsche 911s's aren't driven - not that our lowly TR's will ever reach this level of status. They simply became so valuable that they're now largely collector items spending most of their time in climate controlled storage or on trailers being towed to to and from meets. We've joked about this before on this list and it was meant tongue-in-cheek.

??? Why won't you be able to drive your cars? Petrol too expensive? Other than not being able to afford as much petrol being on social insecurity I haven't noticed any issue with driving my cars.

In the various issues of Classic Motorsports, the editors comment on many
of the cars sold at auction as being above or below the #1 or #2 value
according to the Hagerty?s evaluation. Perhaps Hagerty?s published a value
guide online for collectible cars. I?ve never checked out the Hagerty?s
site but I?d bet the values change on a regular basis. Seems to me that
TR2?s and 3?s ought to bring good money if they?re in good condition. There
are fewer of them surviving on the road today that TR6?s and their lines
are pretty classic (similar to XK 120 or 150?s and others).

Hagerty recently sent me a message saying my Spitfire has increased in value and I should pay for more insurance. I haven?t seen that dynamic in the asking prices I see.
Now I wonder why they are blowing smoke up my dress that my TR6 is worth in the neighborhood of $50k when I have the agreed insured value at half that. Hmmmmm?

Yes, 

I was running GoodParts half-shaft CV axles and updated preloaded aluminum wheel bearing hubs and flanges in my green Stag since about 2007 if I recall correctly.  There was a writeup in the Stag Newsletter at the time.  I have installed them in almost every Stag I have owned or worked on in my Garage, got a pile of old UJ axles shafts to show for it..

 

Another feature built into these CV axles is if you upgrade to rear disk brake calipers, there is a clip on the solid shaft that allows the axle to compensate for a caliper mounting bracket spacing.  That is the same for the Stag or the TR series CV axles.

 

And the CV half shaft axles are designed for 300bhp which is more than a standard TR/Stag diff will handle which is supposedly 250bhp

Yes.? A very rare, special car.? But A-H's of all stripes are going for big money.? They're nice cars but are they worth 2.5X a TR6?

 ???? So I have an electric fan in my TR3 and have a thermostatic switch 
probe in the top inlet to the radiator that leaks slowly while driving. 
I made a little saddle out of a piece of radiator hose that tapers off 
to a feather edge and has a hole drilled through it and then a slice 
down to the hole. I inserted the bourdon tube into the slot, taped that 
around the inlet and then tried to slide the top hose over it and 
tighten it up. The hose would push the little saddle out of position 
and? cause a leak. I attached a jpeg and hope that it comes through.

 ???? Anyone else have these problems? Years again I asked Randall 
(remember him?) and he told me that he just put a switch on his dash and 
turned it on manually.

 ???? The switch said that it could be mounted externally by just 
squeezing it on between the radiator tubes. Seems inaccurate and 
hazardous to the radiator for me. I was thinking of mounting it on the 
top backside of the radiator using some high temperature aluminum tape.

Or in this case it was wet august nights.  Rained on and off for 2 days.  Ask anyone who lives in Reno ? it never rains there!!!

But ? there were 2 TR6s, both Mallard Green (that never happens), a red rubber bumper MGB, a white bug eye Sprite, and a strange little fiberglass British car that I don?t remember the maker and I have never heard of.

Plus absolutely every American muscle car, and then some.  A number of VWs, too.  Did not see a single Italian or German car.

It is absolutely the most amazing insane car event I have ever been to.  Highly recommended.  Lasts 10 days but the best time is the final Friday and Saturday

 A Bimini top is a thing developed primarily for boats*.? Some fabricators have started making some for cars.? I've seen them on Austin-Healeys and MG's.? It is basically a top with no windows, or you might say it is a sun shade.? Some TR's (TR6, TR7) have a zip-out window which achieves essentially the same thing but other cars who's tops do not have a zip-out window are jealous and could do with a Bimini top.? Below is a picture of a Bimini top in a boat* application.

I agree with Alex, it's probably a Bimini top David's looking for.  Here is
a picture of my 3 with it's Bimini.  There was a guy down in Houston making
them for 3's & 4's but he went dark after the Houston floods and although
I've tried several times to contact him, I haven't had any luck (hope he's
ok!).  I don't know anyone who makes them for Stag's though.

Factory tops for TR2 ? TR4a did not have an unzippable rear window, nor did MGAs and previous.

BUT ? Little British Car Co ? aka lbcarco.com supplies them.  I bought a top for my early TR4 with an unzippable rear window and we love it.

to a modern R134 system.? I also upgraded the radiator to an aluminum 
one from Wizard Cooling.

Anyone have a Tr4A-6 ball joint handy and can measure some diameters? I need to replace the boots, which aren?t sold separately at least not that I can find. There are generic boots available. I need the diameter at the base (where the boot fits over the housing) and the diameter at the end of the tapered stud.

	I have had an increasing ?clunk? from the rear right of my car this season.  I tracked it down to the splines on my wire wheel being worn and allowing radial play on the wheel hub.  Since getting the wires about 20 years ago I?ve been good about keeping them tight on the wheels and am a bit puzzled as to why there seems to be such wear after less than 40,000 miles. 
	This brings me to my next issue.  I?m having trouble finding a tire shop , that after I swap the spare for the worn wheel can balance wire wheels properly.  The one place that I was sure could properly balance the wheels, Her Majesty?s Auto Service in Swansea MA. seems to have gone out of business and I can?t seem to goggle another local place that has the adapters to accurately balance the wire wheels. Any assistance in finding a Massachusetts  tire shop that could do the work  would be appreciated.

When I 1st bought my 65EType Roadster and bought new tires for the wire wheels, a perfect wheel balance didn't stop vibration on Rear Axles as the Etype, pre TR6 had IRS and the axles were/are part of the balancing equation.I found a shop that had a wheel balancer that one would put the wheel onto. Machine had rollers like a speed tune shop and thus balanced the entire tire/ wheel/ axles 'System'.The 'Old Timers' told me in the 1920s, when wooden spoke wheels and tires (not made to contemporary standards) didn't balance on/with 'static balancers'; the Solution was to put sand in the tube or the tire ( if no tube).As the wheel spins. Over tightening the spinners can cause the hub to expand and thus 
causing excessive movement.? The spinners are left and right handed and 
as such are are self tightening. You should check the owners manual but 
my memory is to snug the wheels with the supplied mallet and let them do 
the rest themselves.


Please note that regardless of how tight you make the spinners if there 
is slack in the splines the wheels will move every time you cycle a 
braking event with an acceleration.? Extra horsepower and hard usage 
will cause the wheels/splines to wear more quickly.? Don't forget they 
were designed back when 100 HP was considered a lot.? Jag wheels have 
larger diameter splines which also have a larger spline area. Knock off 
steel wheels with locating dowels rather than splines were developed for 
racing for just these reason.? It is also why they stopped trying to use 
wire wheels on Cobras.

You were not specific, but I bet you have an IRS TR6.  Other sources of clunking are the half-shaft splines and the shock absorber mounting bolts.  

U-joints, six of them(!) can go bad and develop a click or a clunk.  On one of my cars 5 of 6 were BAD. Really bad!  The clicking/clunking was noticeable but not exceptional except for the super extra bad u-joint at the front of the drive shaft. That one was so bad I don?t know how it didn?t fall apart!  The rollers were in fragments!!

I have balanced my tires the old fashioned way on a bubble balance.  

Don?t just get the bubble ?inside the ring?.  Get it dead center.  Then lift the wheel off the balancer, rotate the balancer a bit, and put it back down again.  Verify the bubble is still dead center.  

When I do it this way, I do not notice and out-of balance vibration.  Though wire wheels can go out of true.

Did you replace the hubs along with the rear wheels?  Hubs can wear too, so
even if you put new wheels on you will get the back and forth motion
(especially at the rear, driven wheels) that slowly hammers out the
tolerances over time.

I have read all the theory on self tightening spinners, but I have always
put them on good and tight plus a few knocks more for good measure.

When young I had lots of cars with worn splines, and a good tightening
would stop them from knocking (for a while anyway, then they would start
again, I believe the self tightening thing may work, but maybe not so much
for well worn wheels and hubs?).

Bentley manual seems very straight forward:  pull out the rack; just push in when putting back, may need to wiggle the wiper arm spindles to align.  Is it that easy?  Any tips, tricks, warnings?

In case anyone decides their TR3 frame is beyond repair (although I see people out there on the chat pages repairing frames I would have ditched a long time ago), I have a very nice TR3 (actually, TR3A) frame for sale. The frame had 3 areas which required attention: as often happens, the front horns showed evidence of damage; there was one areas of damage along the PS rail at the jacking point; and a previous owner had removed the clamping point for the steering column (maybe to fit a one-piece column).  These were all repaired at a local fabrication shop. Pic attached.  Frame is in Jackson, Michigan.  $800

 The short answer is yes.? Your ignition system shares a ground with your 12 system.? No problems.
The longer answer is "it depends."? It depends on your step-down "transformer," whatever that is.? But I suspect it is just a buck voltage regulator and it is non-isolated and there will be no issues there.

David,

Ground is ground regardless of the voltage.  Consider your house.  It has possibly 480VAC 3 phase,
or 220/240VAC two phase and then each leg of that makes 120VAC and all that goes to a single ground
point.  Having different grounds for different voltages causes problems on the same machine.

For maintaining power for the instruments, first verify that they actually operate on 6.25VDC or if
there might be a bimetal regulator for a constant 5 vdc which is possible. 

Next you should look for a 12 DCV to 6 DCV voltage "regulator", rated at couple of amps DC and input
/ outputs protected by properly sized fuses, not a "transformer".  Transformers are typically for
Alternating current, and voltage dropping power resistors are used to reduce DC volts to ~6 volts to
power the instruments.  The problem with voltage dropping resistors is that they create heat if
there is any load so locating it is sensitive so you don't burn up anything, and they consume power
on anything that is unswitched.  A power converter will work far better.

For everything else like lights, ignition components, starter, generator to an alternator, make sure
your wiring is properly sized so it can handle the amps needed for your new stuff.

Hi Dave,

I?ll have to go look at mine, but IIRC there is a little tab that engages when they are fully seated.  Do your new arms have the tab?  Are they going on enough for it to engage?

I think the knurled part of the wheel box may be too long to engage the little clip on the actual arm but I need to measure them both.

I'm having a similar issue with the arm flying off a new wheel box. Will measure vs a stock one tomorrow. Just might be. Chinese measurements suck.
