 I was told by a college physics professor that silicone may be quick to take up air but it is also quick to give it up.  That is why they use silicone oil in high vacuum pumps.  So the trick I use is I fill the reservoir and wait a while before bleeding.  I fill it and walk away. I go do something else and come back to the brakes in a couple hours or the next day.  This gives it time to release any entrained air.
I've run DOT5 in my cars for the past 20 odd years with no issues above and beyond normal maintenance.

It is true that you cannot use an air powered bleeder for DOT 5.  It will put air bubbles in that will be pretty hard to get out.
