[TR] Help with a TR7

My friend has a 1980 TR7, pretty stock, and he sent me this photo and
message.  Can anyone help?

 

The picture is of the plate that's bolted to the back of the block. A hose
connects this plate to heater output. I originally though that the leak was
the heater core since the water was dripping from the firewall. When Mike
and I were adjusting the carbs, very hot water was coming from the block and
hitting the firewall. I could use some opinions about the origin of the
leak.
