Years ago, my uncle had a van he pulled behind his motorhome.  He got some
sort of kit for it that fit in the drivesahft and would engage or disengage
the drivetrain by means of a lever or cable or something - sort of a clutch
between drive shaft and differential.

This was over 40 years ago, and such things may no longer be made.  But if
you can find one, it could be an option.
