Double checked that we had the ground to the engine and the positive to the electrical system. The multimeter, with the red on the positive terminal and the black on the negative, read -9.97

 This battery was apparently in the car.  Did you check this battery right at the terminals?

Subject: Re: [TR] what is going on?????  Did you test directly at the battery terminals?  It is possible to charge a dead battery in the wrong polarity.  If the battery was complete dead and someone hooked up the charger with the polarity reversed (ie: positive charger lead to the NEG battery terminal and vice-versa) it will charge up in the wrong polarity.  I've seen it done.  Many of the smart chargers will not do this.  Many will not charge a dead battery, but some will and the old style chargers don't care.  Connecting a battery to a car in the reverse polarity will cause all manner of problems.  It is not recommended.  Dave     -----Original Message-----

We bought a car a few months ago (an 88 jeep actually).  Wasn’t running or driving, needed some work, battery was dead. Today we finally got it running and driving using a known good battery from another car.
