Dave,

It’s a double threaded post, bonded in rubber.  I have seen just the broken stub but will ask if he has a picture.  I found a very similar item in the McMaster-Carr catalogue but still looking for the real deal if available.

Any chance your friend has a picture of what this item looks like? Substitutes or improvisation may be his best bet...
