Canada switched to metric in 1970 under Pierre Trudeau (our current Prime Minister’s father). In 1971, the government created a “Metric Commission” to oversee the process.

What year did Canada switch from miles to Kilometres? Normal practice for changing legislation was for the new requirement to be built in to the car at least one calendar year in advance. This did not necessarily apply to US Federal specs because they often were not confirmed until June of the previous model year. That said, when Sweden changed its rule of the road, cars with LH steer were being shipped at least three years before the change became effective.
