[TR] Spotted in La Jolla last month -- exactly *what* did I spot, though?

Looks Italian.  Was it rear engine or could you tell?

 

Its funny – last week here in Dallas I saw a rear engine car that definitely was not a Karmen Ghia.    Again, thought it was Italian but it took a turn and disappeared.

Driving colleagues through the small streets in La Jolla in late February, I saw an interesting vintage sports car oncoming.  Grabbed a couple of bad shots before it got out of sight.  

 

But exactly what is it?  I can't really even offer a guess...
