[TR] FW: auto fan controllers

 my desire was to have the fan come on automatically, even though im using an alternator.
as you know Randall i live in the desert here in so cal and our worse days can get up to around 110.
if controlled by a manual switch on the dash my concern is that a moment of forgetfulness will lead to a very quick disaster.
pulling up that long long the hill from escondido to temecula puts quite the strain on the cooling system. especially when traffic is heavy and not so fast. i find that i need the 14" fan full blast and air moving through the radiator by normal means, and on occasion i have run the heater inside to keep things in line.

Dunno if that really makes sense, but I've been pleased with the result. Stopped at a traffic light or similar, the gauge slowly rises until the needle points to just about the '5' in "185". Then the fan comes on, and it drops back to about the '8' (which is just barely above where it sits going down the road).

Only other time the fan runs is sometimes when getting off the freeway, it will run for a few seconds until I get back up to 30-40 mph.

Also using a 3/8ths standard pipe thread (ISTR) T adapter, I screwed it in where the heater valve mounts to the head.  A plus is the temp it kicks on at is measured where the hottest part of the engine (I also STR) is, between number 3 and 4 cylinders.

i have been using an auto fan controller for my TR3. 

see the link below for the type i have been using. 

i first used it without a relay and then put in a relay. 

doesn't seem to matter how i wire them they all seem to last only 2 to 3 years. 

and its year 3 on my tr3. 

what are you guys using and how reliable have you found them? 

being a TR3 im not going to pull the radiator to drill and solder a fitting into the top. ill continue to replace every 2 years rather than pull that darn front clip again.
