[TR] TR2/3/4 Water Pumps

Nope, not in a green Lucas box; flange and nut were original size.

Longer studs might not be a good solution either; the ends of the studs are pretty close to the pulley edge. Even with the original studs, there isn’t room to get the nuts between the stud ends and the pulley, until you pull the pump out a bit from it’s installed position.

Hi Randall,

My pump also was from TRF – was yours also in a green Lucas box?   I appreciate buying a new pulley will likely solve the one problem but not the additional thickness of the mounting flange which could be solved with longer studs.  I take it you did not have this problem?

Cheers,

Brian

FWIW, the replacement pump I got from TRF fit perfectly.

One thing to watch for, though, the pulley needs to be a very snug fit on the shaft.  If your old pulley will go on with just your fingers, you should either replace it, or you can try one of the Loctite “retaining compounds”.  I’ve had good luck with RC609, but they make one that Is thicker and fills larger spaces.

But the new pulley from TRF also fit as it should, no Loctite needed.

Currently doing a frame up on our early TR2, I decided to replace the water pump which although working and not leaking wasn’t as smooth turning as it should be.   The original pump (with grease fitting) had been replaced prior to my ownership with a Quinten-Hazel (QH) version  which appears to be dated 1978.  I believe the pulley present is original or at least original style.

My problem is the Lucas-boxed 4 vane pump I ordered as a replacement has sizing issues.

The mounting flange is 1/16” thicker than the QH pump.  The consequence of this is the nuts do not tighten fully over the studs leaving I suspect about a 1/16” depression.  The second problem is with the nyloc nut that holds the pulley on.  This nut is about twice the diameter of the originals and so thick it doesn’t come close to engaging the nyloc feature.  The washer supplied is also very thick and replacement with a thinner version might help but not enough.

Anyone else experienced this?  Solutions?

Comments appreciated.

Cheers,

Brian
