A couple of decent tests/reviews, and yes some juvenile humor, such as Jeremy ice-racing a Lambo Urus vs. Abbie Eaton in a Porsche, on a penis-shaped track. But then --- the tour-de-force --- a 20-minute historical tribute to Jim Clark, with plenty of photos and footage. Oh, my. They include interviews with a couple of his colleagues, who tear up a little - as did I. And Richard Hammond gets to drive the very Lotus 25 that Clark himself drove! If you have Amazon Prime, watch this one. It's episode 5 of Season 3, titled "An Itchy Urus" (of course). Leave the front apron right where it is. Set the car so the front wheels track straight and remove and disconnect the horn-push / turn signal head. Right before your very eyes will be a big nut (guaranteed you won't have a socket that fits, but that's a good reason to add one to your tool box). Unscrew the nut and carefully pull the wheel toward you until it comes off of the steering column shaft. Fiddle with the wheel until it looks right to you and (you guessed it), the rest is the reverse of what you just did. Just to add a few hints, to remove the control head, remove the 3 grub screws in the steering wheel, they are a little hard to see if you are not looking for them, and pull the head out from the stator tube. If you have a little extra wire coming out of the steering box, you don't have to remove the horn-push/turn signal head completely - it may be helpful to have someone feed the wires up from the bottom of the steering box while you pull on the head. If you don't remove the head completely along with all the wires, which just makes it that much more difficult to reinstall, you can't use a socket on that nut. I used a large adjustable crescent wrench vertically with a screw driver through the hole at the end of the handle, but an open end wrench of the right size if you have one, which i don't, may work better. BTW, I don't have any Whitworth wrenches and have managed many projects on my TR3 and my 49 TR 2000 without them. I'm pretty sure that the steering wheel can be realigned by removing one of the bolts on the coupler and pulling on the wheel will disconnect the shaft and coupler, then the shaft can be rotated and reset to another spline in the shaft to straighten the wheel without disconnecting anything else. The crush sleeve will have to be loosened on the end of the horn and turn signal wire tube at the bottom of the steering box to allow the tube and wires to be pulled with the wheel and upper shaft. You should only have to pull it about an inch to clear the coupler splines and rotate it to another location. Spreading the coupler split with a screw driver may help loosen the grip between the shaft and coupler. Of course, if you have an early TR with the one piece steering column, then you'd have to pull the steering wheel off for realignment. I literally just did this today to replace the felt in the steering column. You're in luck Jim! This is one of the easier jobs on a TR3. > On August 12, 2019 at 6:52 PM Jim Henningsen wrote: > > > First, being relatively new to the TR3 line, I am noticing some of the > bolts don't match up to my SAE wrenches. The correct Wentworth Wrench was prefect. If you can find a set on eBay pretty cheap, they're nice to have. One thing to watch for, though, the pulley needs to be a very snug fit on the shaft.? If your old pulley will go on with just your fingers, you should either replace it, or you can try one of the Loctite ?retaining compounds?.? I?ve had good luck with RC609, but they make one that Is thicker and fills larger spaces. If the gauge starts to climb towards full, then the gauge & wiring to it are probably OK. Probably best to not leave it this way for long, but a few minutes won?t hurt. My next suspect (especially since it worked before restoration) would be the grounding for the sender. IIRC the TR4 grounds the same as TR3, meaning not very well. I like to add a ground wire from the stud on the sender to one of the tank mounting bolts. Use an ohmmeter to check the sender. I don?t recall the exact numbers offhand, but it?s something like 100 ohms empty and 10 ohms full. If it seems to work backwards (low resistance empty and high resistance full), you?ve got a TR3 sender instead of TR4. Also worth checking the temp gauge if the first test above doesn?t work. Do the same thing, pull the wire off the sender and ground it. If temp gauge doesn?t respond either, it?s probably the voltage stabilizer. Seems like maybe it?s mounted over in the passenger footwell on a TR4, but honestly I don?t recall for sure. -- Randall Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Jim Henningsen Sent: Saturday, August 17, 2019 6:54 PM To: 'Triumphs' Subject: [TR] Fuel gauge troubles Help, I'm calling the TR bat phone again. As you and Randall pointed out, I think that's it. I swapped out the speedo unit with an NOS one during restoration and didn't change the voltage stabilizer from my orig speedo which was probably already changed to Neg ground. Since all worked prior to disassembly and had already been converted to neg ground. Let me dig it up in the parts bin and swap it out. I also did grounding tests on temp and fuel sending units and still not working. Both of those gauge feeds are downstream of the voltage stabilizer so that's the next thing to check. Nothing like getting all of the bugs out of a fresh restoration. If the gauge starts to climb towards full, then the gauge & wiring to it are probably OK. Probably best to not leave it this way for long, but a few minutes won't hurt. I don't recall the exact numbers offhand, but it's something like 100 ohms empty and 10 ohms full. If it seems to work backwards (low resistance empty and high resistance full), you've got a TR3 sender instead of TR4. Also worth checking the temp gauge if the first test above doesn't work. Do the same thing, pull the wire off the sender and ground it. If temp gauge doesn't respond either, it's probably the voltage stabilizer. Seems like maybe it's mounted over in the passenger footwell on a TR4, but honestly I don't recall for sure. -- Randall Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Jim Henningsen Sent: Saturday, August 17, 2019 6:54 PM To: 'Triumphs' Subject: [TR] Fuel gauge troubles Help, I'm calling the TR bat phone again. So I turned over the engine with a wrench (having sprayed lubricant into the cylinders thru the spark plug holes), I even ran a couple of feet of lamp cord into the spark plug hole hoping that might help push out the rusty (I guess) valve but it still wouldn't budge using my socket wrench.) I contemplated using a cheater pipe on my socket wrench, but didnt want to chance it. At this point, I think I'll pull the head and take it to my engine shop. When I look at most any pre-war car I find it interesting, but not anything I would ever really want to own, I imagine a lot of younger folks, even car people, feel the same way about "our" cars. In fact I frequent some car forums with a much younger demographic than here, pretty much anything built when carburators were the norm is considered unsafe, finicky, and slow by a pretty large portion of that group. Nothing will make you feel old quite like somebody suggesting that re-mapping a fuel injection system Isa piece of cake, while carbs are a deep, dark mystery. Personally, I find the adjustable steering wheel goes in the wrong direction. I am of average height, 5'9". I like a shorter distance to the peddles, meaning, I like the seat forward and a little straighter arm to the wheel. The adjustable wheel actually lengthens the distance between the dash capping when shortened all the way. When it's extended, arms are too bent and the wheel too close. So, one would think if you are shorter, you would want the seat far forward and the steering wheel would also move in that direction. If one is really tall, the seat goes back and the wheel forward for more arm length. On my TR3 race car, I made the non-adjustable column shorter so there is just enough comfortable clearance so my fingers don't touch the dash capping, but it's close. I also modified the Kirkey Vintage racing seat to further recline it in order to gain arm length to the wheel. To me, these cars are all screwed up in terms of ergonomics. Just adding an option doesn't necessarily make it better, but it sure sounds like it must be a good thing. It's adjustable! Yay! However, maybe the TR3's stylishness will throw off the cops if they pull me over. I pulled back the tarp, (I had prievously removed the bonnett), lifted the valve cover and saw that I needed a pushrod tube as I never completed the valve adjustment job about 5 years ago.In doing so I also saw one of the valves stuck open! I don't remember this happening, but I'll need to address it before continuing with the valve adjustment. Is there any likelyhood that something like stuck open because of a dry valve guide?? I don't see younger generations filling in the ranks. For years now, prices have been falling on American 60s & 70s classics. I talked to a big Healey guy last weekend who said prices for them have been soft. The classic Land Rover group has lots of enthusiasts in their 20s & 30s because they also get used for off road driving/camping/fishing/hunting and just about anything else. Whereas most British sports cars that are remotely competitive in field meets go to field meets, club runs, and not much else. Most people (not including me) have newer fuel injected climate controlled, airbag cars for everyday use while their British sports car sits in the garage waiting for a special reason to be driven. Heart is a 741 style op amp IC, which drives a power MOSFET, which in turns drives a cheap auto relay. Probably could have left out the relay, but I used it anyway. The other key piece turned out to be using a voltage regulator IC to feed the whole thing (except the relay contacts). Without the VR, the kickback from the fan motor would cause the relay to chatter under some conditions. (Since the unit was already installed when I figured that out, I just tapped into the VR that also supplies my TR4 temp gauge). For the sensor, I used an old GM (I think it was) gauge sender, which screws into the opening in the back of the water pump housing where the heater return goes (on cars with heaters). Although I didn?t try it, I believe you could put a tee piece there and still hook up the heater return if you wanted to. That?s probably not much help. If I didn?t want to build one, I?d probably still be using the DeRale electronic controller, with a probe that just pushes into the radiator fins (like the one you linked to). I ran one on a Stag for almost a year, but converted back to a mechanical fan as the electric pusher seemed to block air flow at freeway speeds. https://www.amazon.com/Derale-16759-Adjustable-Fan-Controller/dp/B000CN4XZI/ref=pd_cp_263_2 Hayden offers a similar unit as well, which I?ll bet would also be more reliable and longer lived than your ?economy? ebay find. - Randall -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... One of my goals was to have the fan run as little as possible, to try and get by with the stock 19 amp generator. My thought was that I didn't want the fan to run, if airflow through the radiator was already sufficient to keep it cool; even if the water coming out of the engine was "hot". Dunno if that really makes sense, but I've been pleased with the result. Stopped at a traffic light or similar, the gauge slowly rises until the needle points to just about the '5' in "185". Then the fan comes on, and it drops back to about the '8' (which is just barely above where it sits going down the road). I found pictures of the Omix-ADA Fuel Level Float Part # 17729.01 for Jeeps.? It may work, but I can't seem to find any stores in the region that stock it.? May just need to order one to try it.? I saw the brass one for the Mustang (FM-EF005B or C0AZ-9202B), but also saw a comment that the groove was too big for use on a Spitfire.? Looks like Ford uses a thicker wire.? May try and take the sender to a Ford dealer parts department and see if they have it and it fits. I've checked TRF, Moss, and Spitbits and can't find the float.? I also looked at my GT6 parts catalog and don't see a part number for the float. The goal is to avoid "overheating", not to keep the temp "normal". So it does a OK to let it run as high as possible subject to the limit that it never runs into the "red" zone. And then it should run only long enough to bring the temp down a bit. As Randall said, the fan will suck lots of power and it is good to minimize its appetite. My daily driver has an electric coolant pump. Not something that I am particularly thrilled about since it can and does fail.... but the controller appears to be "smart". I noticed that when I step hard on the throttle, the coolant temperature goes DOWN briefly. The controller seems to anticipate extra thermal load and increases the flow rate. I certainly hope the thermostat isn't "smart" too but I suppose that with a sufficiently smart pump then a thermostat isn't even necessary!!!!! I don't know for sure if that engine HAS a thermostat. -Tony Sent from my 1837 Babbage Analytical Engine > On Aug 29, 2019, at 2:00 PM, triumphs-request at autox.team.net wrote: > > Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2019 18:33:38 -0500 > From: Randall > To: TERRY SMITH ,triumphs at autox.team.net > Subject: Re: [TR] FW: auto fan controllers > Message-ID: > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" > > Different ways to look at it. Then the fan comes on, and it drops back to about the '8' (which is just barely above where it sits going down the road). > > Only other time the fan runs is sometimes when getting off the freeway, it will run for a few seconds until I get back up to 30-40 mph. > -- Randall From Arakelianp at mossmotors.com Fri Aug 30 12:23:59 2019 From: Arakelianp at mossmotors.com (Pete Arakelian) Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2019 18:23:59 +0000 Subject: [TR] Gas in fuel tank float Message-ID: Again, not trying to push, but if you cannot find it anywhere, Moss stocks the brass replacement under 360-646.
