Have you considered it might be the cable?

Subject: [TR] skreeching tachometer

hi everyone:

i am new here and i come bearing a problem :

the tachometer on my 1966 tr4a makes unbearable screeeeeming noise. the noise never goes away . time, distance, speed , weather , and temperature make no difference.

i disconnected the cable to achieve blessed quiet.

the tach is now out and sitting on my workbench.

all i know to do is take it apart and oil it.
is that a good idea ? risky ?
what sort of lubricant ? is there anything else i should look for ?

thanks
            fred zampa macon ga
