That’s correct. A TR3 is non-ballasted and needs a coil with 3 ohms resistance.

If there are confusing or conflicting references... perhaps the simplest approach would be to measure the resistance across the terminals.

If I recall correctly...

About 3 ohms is correct for a TR3

About 1.5 ohms is a coil that needs an external ballast resistor

My Lucas catalog seems to indicate that it requires a ballast resistance;
Lucas model 2BR P/N 47170A

The coil & ballast are listed as a "cold climates" option for 65 TR4.
