[TR] TR3A Apron Off!

Jim,

You're installing a new multi-blade fan for cooling, which is always a good idea. To take that a bit further, drivability, are you running a generator or has the car been converted to a negative ground and running an alternator?  I ask that because I made that conversion to an alternator, and went to the skinny belt with a billet aluminum harmonic balancer pulley which eliminates the long bull nose fan pulley.  With that gone I had LOTs of room to install an electric fan on the engine side of the radiator.  It works very well too.  I got to be in a July 4th parade with my wife, who is the local Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year, sitting on the back next to the gas cap in my 1960 TR3. The first 30+ mins of the parade had a very slight downhill grade, so my car was idling the whole time and it didn't overheat and I could hear the fan cycling on and off.  Not sure that would have been the case with a traditional fan.

Unless you plan to change the timing chain, or the timing cover is leaking, I don't see any reason to change the timing cover gasket just because you have access to it.

Took the apron off my 48k mile 61 TR3A for the first time. Not as bad as I
was thinking it was going to be. I am changing out the original Coventry
radiator with an aluminum one and installing yellow TR6 fan and new install
kit to help with keeping engine in the normal range. Will flush out engine
along the way. Not worried about correctness for shows, but enhanced
driveability.

What else should I do while I have front access to the engine? The car was
frame off restored 30 years ago and only 2000 miles on since. Still very
clean. I replaced front engine mounts, cooling hoses, fan belt. The car had
an electric fan on the front of the radiator. I had hoped to put one on the
engine side of the radiator but there is only 1 1/2 inch clearance between
rad and front hub. Should I keep electric fan on front as backup, although
it might block air going in? Should I change out timing seal, gaskets? Any
thoughts on items to do with apron off much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
