[TR] The Gift of a Triumph

When I was getting my car on the road in 2013, after it had been sitting for 20+ years, I bought it as a project, I wanted to upgrade what ever I could to make it more dependable.  I'm enjoying seeing almost everything I did, be suggested.  So, this is the list of what I did.

- TR4A Head
- 87.5 Big Bore Kit
- Engine balanced
- Hastings Rings
- Viton Rear Main Crank Seal Conversion
- Wizard Racing Aluminum Radiator
- Electric Fan
- Skinny Belt Pulleys
- Harmonic Balancer Pulley
- Rebuilt SU Carburetors
- Distributor Rebuilt by Advanced Distributors
- Petronix Points
- Lucas Alternator
- Hi Torque Starter Motor
- Negative ground conversion
- Spin-on oil filter conversion
- Optima Battery
- Hardi Electric Fuel Pump
- 9.2lb alloy flywheel (stock is 32 lbs)
- TR6 Clutch & Pressure Plate
- Rebuilt TR4 OD Transmission
- Rebuilt Rear Differential with taller gears
- Rebuilt Driveshaft
- Adjustable Rear Racing Lever Shocks
- Rebuilt Gauges at Palo Alto Speedometer
- Miata seats
- Moto-Lita Steering Wheel
- 6 1/2" Panasport Wheels
- 205/60R15 Goodrich Tires
- 7/8” front sway bar

Currently it's kind of a rat-rod as it's painted flat black which does get a lot of positive comments. I wanted to get all the mechanicals sorted before dealing with paint.  I'll be looking into this Dan Masters wiring system too as my wiring is kind of a mess.

1. Electronic ignition

2. Weber carbs.

3. Advance Wire (Dan Masters) wiring harness.

4. Steel (or Panasport) wheels. (Not wire).

5. Gear reduced starter.

Several other things come to mind, including an aluminum radiator, but those are the very first “reliability” things I would consider. Basically, take away all of the subsystems that can go out of adjustment.

So many suggestions, but if the car is for a young lady, a rack and pinion
conversion would make steering soooo much easier.

Subject: [TR] The Gift of a Triumph

I met a new friend today. He owns a TR3 and has owned it for about 35
years, He did a restoration on it a while back and talked to me about
doing some maintenance on this treasure because he wants to give it
to his daughter, who is graduating from college this spring.

I reminded him that giving someone a TR3, especially someone not
mechanical inclined, is not necessarily a gift of love.

We discussed some ways in which the TR3 could be a more reliable car
for his daughter. It would not be her primary transportation, just
something to occasionally enjoy, but not become a maintenance burden
or morph into just another non-running TR3 laid up in someone's
garage.

It is bone stock. I have a few ideas about what might be changed to
make it more suitable for a gift, but I'd appreciate some ideas from
the list since what I would do for my TR# might be very different from
what might be best for this young TR3 owner.
