I did the same thing as George. I put in the Miata MX5 seats and I
was thrilled! I hated the seats in my TR3. With the MX5 seats, I
felt like I could drive around the world in comfort. I've often
thought that the TR3 seats were some sort of after thought. "Well, we
have this car completed, but no seats." Then one of the designers
says, "I've got some patio chairs that I'm taking to the dump. We
could use those!" And the design chair said, "Great idea, bring them
in!"

The seats in my TR4A were not comfortable from the day I bought it in
1985 and remained that way through a couple re-coverings.
A small lumbar pad was always needed. The problem as I see it is the
failure of the back cushion to pivot from the bottom cushion, so it's
always too upright. Backs weren't supposed to be bent so upright.
Especially old ones!
My solution was Miata seats with hinged backrests. An incredible
difference!
Otherwise, the seat frames would have to be cut apart and re-welded at
a more comfortable angle. I suppose the back cushion could be
overstuffed at the bottom for greater lumbar support.
