IMO it is impossible to adequately clean and inspect the components without
removing the annulus from the housing.  And I would not be willing to skip
that step for an "unknown" gearbox; especially given what a PITA it is to
R&R the gearbox on a Stag.

Just to give you some idea of what can be lurking, here's what someone on
another forum found in his "good functioning" J-type

As it happens, it takes only a tiny bit of dirt or swarf to jam the dashpot,
which can potentially lead to the OD engaging in reverse and doing major
damage to itself.  I can't explain how it got past the magnet and through
two levels of screen, but I don't know how else it got in there either.

Again IMO, Either get some, or take the job to someone who has the right
