To get the best benefit from the recovery bottle, you should start with
enough coolant to cover the end of the hose from the radiator. The theory
is that not having air present in the upper tank keeps it from getting mixed
with the coolant (reducing its effectiveness).
It also makes it much more obvious when you have small leaks; like a head
gasket that lets combustion gases escape into the coolant only when you
really get on the throttle (BTDT) or a drain tap that weeps only at high
rpm/pressure (ditto).
