Not likely to be the problem.  The original warning light comes on to show
that the cutout relay is open; one side is connected to the generator side
of the cutout contacts, the other side to the ignition switch.  The cutout
relay should close as soon as the engine starts, and stay that way until the
engine stops.

Instead, you have some reason that the voltage at the switch is different
than the voltage at the cutout/control box.  A bad connection or damaged
wire is most likely.  Could be dirty contacts at the cutout; but they can be
cleaned pretty easy.

But I have to say, by the time you have a non-original generator, and a
non-original control box; it makes a lot more sense to me to just go with a
modern internally regulated alternator instead.  You can get 3 times the
power output, with twice the efficiency (less drag on the engine), and still
in a smaller package that fits the space better than a generator.  And
weighs a lot less, too.

I opted to keep a gutted original control box in place as a junction block,
but of course you can do that either way.
