[TR] Anyone with experience with the center-lock minator wheels on IRS car?

Hello,

I got fed up with the incurable slight vibration coming from my TR4A-IRS's
wire wheels, and it was time to buy new tires - the old ones are 13 years
old.

So, with the reasonable currency exchange rate, I bought some of the Minator
wheels from Rimmer Brothers.

I got them in short order. No instructions on balancing. Will standard
balancing cones (mounting to the inner diameter of the inside and outside of
the wheel) work? Rimmer's doesn't really know. They recommended the old
fashioned balancing technique using specialized fitting for the outer taper.

But to my EYE the machined center-lock hub in the wheel looks as if it
should be concentric on the inner AND outer diameters of the outer side of
the hub. So that is how I had it balanced.

Then I mounted them on the car and securely tightened the knock-off nuts.
And took the car for a quick spin around the neighborhood.

HMMMM..... that doesn’t sound good....... There is a cyclic clunk coming
from the right rear. What is it????? The wheel is not loose. The splines
are not worn at all. Could it be the Goodparts' CV joint half-shaft I
installed last year failing? Could it be the half-shaft pulling free from
the aluminum trailing arm? The frequency of the clunk seemed to come at the
same frequency of the RPM of the tire.

So, I had time this afternoon to pull off the wheel and really LOOK.

It turns out that the wheel is hitting the studs (holding the splined hub to
the drum) before the tapered seat on the hub seats on the mating surface on
the wheel's adapter!!!!

The wire wheels have a recessed area to provide clearance that the alloy
wheels lack.

Has anyone had this experience before?

I suppose I need to use a cut-off wheel to remove some of the approximately
3/16" of excess thread sticking beyond the nut. But I wonder HOW MUCH I
really need to remove. Any suggestions?
