In the late 70's to 81 I was working with a mini computer that used core memory. This was a 19 inch rack type device and the core planes filled several levels. Then they came out with a really big computer that had a hard drive. It was a good 14 inches in diameter and 5 or 6 inches tall and the annual service was to refill it with nitrogen (or some other clean, dry gas). It had a whopping 1 megabyte!

This may be hard to believe, but in the 80's I had (at work) an IBM
3270PC-XT. Really tricked out with memory and good size hard drive.
Cost--~10K.
When I started (yes we all walked 10 miles in the snow to work;-) work
in the late 60's memory for the IBM mainframe was $1.00/byte. We had
512K.......1/2 Million$
