You would use red Loctite on a fastener where it was critical to have
it stay secured since a catastrophic failure could occur.

That said, such a fastener is difficult to remove, usually requiring
heat and great effort as well as easy access. It is best used in heavy
duty or extreme service applications.

In general, blue is the way to go.

In some circumstances, it is not practical to apply Loctite before the
fastener is secured. This is what green Loctite is best for. Tighten
the fastener, apply a drop of green and it seeps into the threads.
