Brian – Be sure that you are feeding the unit a full 12 volts and not a reduced voltage through a resistance wire or ballast resistor.

Subject: [TR] Pertronix Ignition

Hi,

Last week to solve a very worn distributor issue on our negative ground TR4A, we replaced:

· the distributor body and vacuum advance using NOS Lucas parts

· points etc. with Pertronix Ignitor

· Lucas Sports coil with Pertronix Flame Thrower

The distributor cap, plugs and wires are all fairly recent.

After the install, the car ran incredibly better … for about 100 miles.

Then it completely lost power and we coasted to the side of the road of course in a rural location just before dark and 20 miles from the ferry dock. It would crank but not fire. Diagnosis revealed fuel in the float bowls but no spark. Not having any parts with me, we floated it home via CAA.

The next morning, acting on advice from my mechanic, I tried a new rotor and this which made no difference. Subbing in the Lucas Sports coil, it fired right up. So the Pertronix coil has failed and they have agreed to replace it under warranty.

I’d be interested in hearing other experiences with this setup. Pertronix advises I can run with the Lucas coil as long as it is at least 3.0 ohms. As the Sports coil is 3 ohms, I appear to be good, but am concerned about frying another coil. Obviously, I won’t travel without a spare.

Comments?

Cheers,

Brian
