If I can see correctly, it is the bottom of the tappet (or lifter, or mushroom follower) that is pitted and that is in contact with the camshaft all of the time. I have my own identical (and worse) examples from our TR6.

do i see pitting around the top of the tappet also?
if so that's kinda strange as it has no contact with anything.
