There is certainly a chance that it is in th speedo.  You might try spinning it by hand and seeing if there is any resistance.  The speedo is pretty easy to remove.  I have some square drive bits that fit from cheapo tool kits I have purchased that work, smallish Phillips.  The speedo and trip odo numbers can stick and make the speedo bounce, maybe make the cable break.
