When the alternator in my TR3 died on a trip the shop just put a "kit" 
into the existing housing and I had an instant rebuilt alternator with 
the old housing and new guts.

If you have modified the housing I believe you void any warranty (they 
can not resell it).  Your old one is a total loss if you do not have a 
rebuild kit put in it.
