Hi list, Well, the gearbox seems fine, except for some broken teeth on a synchro gear and other common wear items. A rebuild is in the works. It seems that my lack of experience and inability to interpret the diagram in the manual led to this false alarm. Thanks for the responses I received. The Buckeye Triumphs link had good info.
