A couple of quick ideas:

Check that the intake manifold is on all the way.  It will commonly 
get held up on the locating pin on the lower side of the manifold and 
that's hard to see from above.

Pull the valve cover and verify that valves are opening and closing 
correctly and there's some valve gap.
