Thanks to all who replied, but especially Tom B. who suggested I look at the cover plate as a cause of the "ticking" made worse by depressing the clutch. When I did so, I saw scratch marks on the inside which, of course should have been the outside. Isn't it strange how some parts look like they ought to go a certain way, but don't? Andrew Uprichard
