Yes, exactly.

No.  TR3 always used the raised bosses (which were even pre-drilled and
tapped on early cars).  The shift rails don't even have the notches for the
rear locations to work.  (And of course it takes two switches for a TR3
overdrive, since it also works in 2nd gear.)

I'm not sure why they switched later on, but I'm guessing it had to do with
limited clearance over the front of the gearbox.
