Here is a response from Red Line on the usage.

Sorry for the confusion, your differential originally called for a SAE 90
GL-4, the MT-90 is a well suited replacement.
A GL-4 gear oil is suitable for a zero or low offset hypoid ring and pinion as
well as straight pattern gears fitted in differentials.
A high offset hypoid gear, where the pinion approaches the ring gear well
below it's centerline requires an extreme pressure, GL-5 type gear oil. The
note refers to late model separate differentials which typically contain a
high offset hypoid gear.
