Very likely then, the overdrive is stuck engaged.  Hard to tell the
difference between stuck in direct drive and stuck in OD; except that when
you try to back up with the OD engaged, it forces the sprag clutch to turn
the "wrong" way (generally destroying both the clutch and the housing around
it).

Could be mechanically stuck, or could be an electrical problem.
