I think that's probably a lot of the difference between a cheapo one and 
an expensive one.  Are you measuring the spot that your laser is pointed 
at or are you getting that spot averaged in with the surrounding half acre.

In the cars, mine gets mostly used to compare exhaust temperatures at 
the base of the exhaust ports and to look for hot spots in the fuel 
delivery system.

But I also use mine in the winter to look along the edges of the doors 
and windows for thermal leaks.  It can be a quick spot check for the 
oven, refrigerator  and wine storage temperature calibration among other 
things.

I paid a little more for a narrow focus meter.
