Which was exactly the point of using brass (or bronze) wool instead of
steel.  The brass is considerably softer than chrome (or steel) and hence
less prone to scratch.  And while it's more expensive than steel wool (MMC
gets $4.12 for a package of 3 pads), it's a LOT cheaper than new chrome.

Steel wool is also prone to leave tiny particles of itself caught in any
pits in the chrome, which can later rust and make a mess.
