[TR] Fan extension, but for what?

Hi listers,

On the right is a fan extension for a TS60000 era TR3A, on the left is a fan extension from ebay proporting to be for a
TR2,3,4.   I know if I were to install it on my car the fan would come into quick contact with the steering arm (if not
the chassis brace), any idea what it's really for?
